Hello Everyone,
My name is Scott and I am a resident of Burbank, California. Although I have created this page, I am not here for my own interests. Instead, allow me to tell you a story about hope, strength, and courage. One that began a while ago with a little over a decade in the making, but whose impact has been deeply felt throughout the lives of all that have been touched, and transformed by it along the way. This is the story of my dearest friend Jessica Vitanza, and I invite you to read through it for further insights on why I created this page.
(Jessica giving a tour of Funxional Fitness to our little guest)
If there was ever an incredibly selfless, and compassionate human being with a heart of gold, Jessica is that person…and so much more. A relentless dreamer by heart, and a gym owner by profession, she has committed her life to helping people solve, both their physical and mental health issues through fitness. She does this by always being available to assist others, not only with their workouts, but by also lending an ear and prescribing some loving guidance when needed. A woman who consistently goes the extra mile to ensure everyone’s comfort, peace of mind, and success in achieving their fitness and life goals, Jessica is the most selfless person that I have ever known.
In the decade that Jessica has owned her own fitness facility, a lot has happened along the way, testing her fortitude and resilience in massive proportions. From dealing with a very turbulent and upset membership base, that belonged to the former gym owner of the location she took over, Jessica hasn’t been without challenges. While building out her new facility out of the broken down hull of the previous gym, she was the target of a very undeservingly unkind, and ruthless lash back from the aforementioned members. They were understandably angry at how the previous owner left abruptly without warning, and even though they knew that Jessica had no affiliation with him, she was unjustly the recipient of their incensed rage.
(Jessica rolling up her sleeves during the build out phase)
The build out itself went through unforeseeable challenges and ungodly extra costs. From forced changes to the layout of the gym, by the city’s planning division that permitted the original plans months prior, to an unexpected and highly expensive necessary reinforcement to the foundation, Jessica was taxed both physically and financially. All of these formidable obstacles, also pushed back her opening date by over six months, which was a huge loss in gym producing revenue.
Her personal life was also greatly affected during this incredibly challenging time. She saw the end of a long-term relationship whom she thought she would be with forever. She also singlehandedly went through the worst pain imaginable by losing her beloved grandmother, loving aunt, and long-term friend and mentor, all within the span of two weeks. To top all of this off, her adored cousin abruptly passed away as a result of a seizure. I still remember the day that happened, the phone call that stopped her dead in her tracks, and how she crumbled into my arms sobbing uncontrollably. And yet, with all of these unsurmountable challenges she faced, Jessica still persisted through it all, and went on to build a fitness haven lovingly known as FUNXIONAL FITNESS.
When asked what keeps her going despite all that she has been through, and with the new uncertain threat of the pandemic, her response is: “It’s quite simple…it’s LOVE. I am in the people business and I love everything about it. I’m very fortunate that I discovered my purpose early on in life. FUNXIONAL FITNESS is a vehicle for me… it’s what happens to our patrons, and their amazing transformations, from that experience…that is my work…truly realized and accomplished.” And to be honest, this is what I love so much about Jessica, and what can be defined as the essence of who she really is.
(Everyone looked forward to Jessica's annual "Friendsgiving Feast")

What Jessica has managed to create through FUNXIONAL FITNESS, is a COMMUNITY OF PEOPLE that have become a family, supporting each other in achieving their personal health and fitness goals. The facility is a clean and positive environment where anyone can workout, get healthier, make friendships and connect courtesy of the warm and welcoming ambience she has carefully cultivated. Jessica’s belief in the club, her employees, her trainers, and members, is unwavering and inspired by the need to provide a home for her family. “In times of uncertainty and struggle, what better place to be than a home surrounded by family, where Jessica wants nothing more than to provide her members with a warm hug and a place for people to find the best versions of themselves.” As Aaron Schulman, a member, so eloquently put.
(The most amazing group of human beings we are all proud to call family)
That said, with COVID-19 continually wreaking havoc everywhere, now everything is under threat. Due to both the uncertainty of the length of this second pandemic lockdown, and also Jessica's good nature, she froze all of the monthly membership payments, so that members would not have to endure any more hardships during these tough times. Because of this, now Jessica risks losing her business, and the doors of FUNXIONAL FITNESS may stay closed permanently.
On behalf of Jessica, her fitness facility FUNXIONAL FITNESS, and her loyal base of employees and members, I am humbly requesting for your kind assistance to help keep the gym open and alive. This kind gesture will not only keep the faith and hope of all those who consider it a safe haven, but will also show the world that people want to give back to a person whom lives so selflessly.
Please join hands with us in supporting this kind, passionate, and brave soul - who gives without asking for much and is determined to help people conquer their fears - and together, let us keep FUNXIONAL FITNESS open.

After all of the unpredictable complications that could have prevented the opening of Funxional Fitness, owner and operator Jessica Vitanza never lost sight of her goals, and fought to make this day happen. Before breaking down the wall, Jessica had an artist come in and paint the words, "Don't be afraid of what YOU can become.". She then asked all of the employees, trainers, friends and family, to write down their greatest fears that they must face about themselves.
After doing so, Jessica then took pictures of the entire wall before finally smashing it down to begin the final phase for the opening of the gym. Those pictures became the inspiration for the beautiful mural she had made and placed at the entrance of Funxional Fitness now. It is the first thing one sees when entering, and the last thing seen when leaving, this beautiful reminder of human perseverance.

Here are some testimonials from friends, trainers, and members -
Sam Bustillos -
I am a 72 year-old man who was in failing health when I joined FunXional Fitness. I explained to the owner, Jessica Vitanza what my health conditions were and after taking the time to listen, I joined the gym. Six years later I go to the gym 5-6 days a week and have made great improvements to my health both physically and mentally.
During the months the gym was shut down due to the coronavirus my heart efficiency rate dropped 10% and my cardiologist attributed this to the fact that I was not going to the gym.
I am limited in what I can do outside of the gym for my health, which is why FunXional Fitness is so very important to me and many others. Jessica Vitanza and FunXional Fitness have truly helped to give me my life back and I don’t want to loose that.
Chris Craig -
From the moment my buddy and I signed up, Jessica was warm and welcoming. She made it a point to learn our names and always greets the members with a smile. Her belief in the club, the employees, the trainers, and the clients is unwavering. When I walk into the gym, I KNOW that she and the staff are doing their very best for me and my fellow members. I also know that she will continue to do her best for us through this pandemic and beyond and look forward to supporting her in this endeavor.
Eric Osborn -
Jessica has proven the highest form of love for people and business that a person can have. I can’t begin to describe her motivational words and attention to detail. She knows ME! I’m not just a random member but a friend. She’s simply is the best!
Aaron Schulman -
I first met Jessica during her time as the Club Manager at Bodies in Motion-West LA nearly 14 years ago! Immediately upon meeting her, I was drawn to her infectious passion and desire for health and fitness. She exhibited a deep care for all of the members as well as the staff at the gym and facility. I would always look forward to taking my daily workout breaks from my office just upstairs from the gym, where, during our conversations either pre- or post-workout, her kindness was always on display and often discussed the possibility of opening a gym of her own someday. Nearly a decade since her gym's opening and her dream coming true, that passion for fitness, her members' well-being, and overall compassion has not wavered. FunXional Fitness is a home for Jessica and all of its members are her family. In times of uncertainty and struggle, what better place to be than a home surrounded by family, where Jessica wants nothing more than to provide her members with a warm hug and a place for people to find the best versions of themselves.

“I have been a member of the gym for two years. I was looking for a small, non-meet market gym with the option to have a one on one trainer. It was the second gym I went to in my search and Jessica greeted me with a warm welcome and non-smarmy la crap, just down to earth. I found the gym clean, modern and quite sanitary. Jessica set me up with Vigen and what a perfect match! I have become close to them both, hanging out with Vigen outside the gym environment as well!
It is the perfect gym! Small, clean with friendly staff! I continue to pay my monthly dues because I’m lucky enough to have a job thru the pandemic and I’d like to support Jessica, her gym and her staff! She’s little like me and mighty!

"I moved to Burbank after completing film school ten years ago. At the time, my weight was somewhere between 260 and 270 pounds. For years I did my best to whittle that number down on my own but I was never really able to fully embrace fitness. Then FunXional Fitness moved in a couple blocks away from me.
I walked by FunXional frequently on my nightly walks thinking, "I should take a new step for my health and join a gym". When I finally walked in I met Jessica. She was incredibly kind and, clearly, cared about her establishment and clientele. She made taking that next leap forward an easy decision.
On joining FunXional, Jessica introduced me to a whole community of people, both trainers and clients, committed to their health and supportive of their fellow members. That word community is important because that is what Jessica fosters at FunXional. I would not have been able to find the love of fitness I now have without that.
I also would not have the job I have without it. When the company I used to work for collapsed, Jessica passed my resume on to one of the other members. His company needed an Assistant Editor and I was able to fill that spot. Connecting people is one of Jessica’s greatest strengths and I’m eternally grateful for that.
At the end of the day, there’s not a gym I could recommend more than FunXional Fitness. It’s a clean, positive environment where anyone can work out, get healthier, and make friendships and connections. I’ve met a ton of great people of all ages and fitness levels who are linked together by the joy Jess gets from helping people be their best selves and my workouts are often the greatest parts of my day. I am currently sitting at 175 pounds and am in the best shape I’ve ever been in. That could not have happened with Jess and FunXional Fitness. It is a community that I love dearly."
Bill Toth -
I can’ say enough good things about Jessica and FunXional Fitness. I have been a member of several gyms over the years and none of them come close. From the cleanliness, the equipment, the parking and most of all the non-corporate environment this gym is by far the best. The most important factor is that Jessica REALLY cares about her client’s fitness and health and is not in business just for the money. Lastly, everyone there puts up with my sense of humor and believe me that is huge.
Sandi Haboush -
I live in Valley Village California. Health and exercise are a big part of my life. I have only belonged to one Gym - FunXional Fitness in Burbank.
When I first walked in I could feel the warmth and safety and had a great feeling. I was greeted by Jessica Vitanza who is a super human being! She is very caring and always treats us (her clients) as family. 2020 has been a brutal year for everyone. When everything shut down for months I missed the gym and Jessica very much.
When gyms were allowed to reopen, Jessica complied with all the safety guidelines. It was awesome to continue training workouts. Then all of a sudden gyms closed again. Very unfair to Jessica and the members who observed all the guidelines
I feel FunXional Fitness is essential and should be allowed to operate with the safety precautions Jessica has implemented.
Maureen Spagnolo -
I did my homework. I shopped, called and visited. I wanted to be really comfortable about my choice. Jessica listened to my story. A story of sobriety, family crisis and recovery. I was nervous about committing to my health after so many years. I cried and she hugged. No judgment, only an opportunity to feel good again. She found me the perfect personal trainer match...no easy feat. FunXional Fitness is safe. It's a space to challenge yourself, not about show. We are all here for one thing - longevity.
Beth Goldberg -
Funxional Fitness is the "Cheers" of gyms. Not only does Jessica know everyone's name, but when you are inside those doors, you are family. I've never known a more loving, giving, compassionate person as Jessica and her values are reflected in Funxional Fitness with her dedication to providing a professional and supportive atmosphere to clients and employees alike. Come for the bad ass workout, stay for the hugs!
Emma Krishnaswami -
Jessica Vitanza and Funxional Fitness are rare jewels in the fitness industry. I have been a member and an employee of multiple gyms and health/wellness companies over the years, but Funxional Fitness is a place I'd return to time and time again because Jessica's management and heart are unparalleled in the world of workout facilites. She has created a family that members, employees, and trainers alike immediately feel a part of. She knows all her staff and members' names, asks about everyone's life outside of the gym, and wants to help and know all who come through her door, regardless if they are members or not. When it comes to the facility itself, I always tell people that the pictures they see online are exactly what they will experience at Funxional and more. It is immaculate, organized, and sparkling because Jessica keeps a watchful eye over all operations, making sure that everyone's experience is the same: the best of the best. Her response to covid has been appropriate and trustworthy, requiring everyone to screen before coming in, wear masks, remain 6 feet apart at all times, and wipe down all equipment with the provided wipes. Additionally, her front desk staff went through hourly to wipe down any parts of the equipment that got touched. At no point did I feel that people were being careless when it came to the virus in this facility.
Funxional and Jessica are a vital part of the community. People seek release and refuge from every day stresses in the weights and machines. This gym has saved lives and relationships. Quarantine and covid are destroying lives, but Funxional Fitness and Jessica's unwavering strength was beginning to restore and give hope to many who were losing their way during this time of great unrest. We must keep this gym open. Jess and the community need it.

2 years ago, I moved to California from Florida. I had no place to work, my wife was pregnant and almost helpless without Jessica and Funxional Fitness. Jessica gave me a home to work, she gave me a place to develop and grow. Funxional Fitness is a special gym. It’s a sanctuary for many. A place where members and team members seek refuge for mental and physical help. It’s a true community, with an addictive culture to serve, care for one another. I love being at Funxional Fitness to serve my clients and it’s members.
Reid Kawakami -
Jessica has been a beacon in the fitness community, but specifically to me personally. Fuxional fitness offers such a unique, caring, and personal fitness experience unlike any other. She had provided a safe, family environment for both trainers and clients alike. I couldn’t see myself working at any other gym, and I’m so blessed to have met Jess and given the opportunity to train at Fuxional. As a group, we all support her, and she supports us in return. I can’t say enough about how much respect and adornment I have for Jess personally and the business that she has created.
Sally Hallada -
So happy to have found this gym. After an injury and turning 57, I realized that I needed to make my health a top priority! I started working out before the lockdown and really loved how comfortable I felt - there's a wide assortment of equipment, it's super clean with friendly/helpful staff. During the lockdown, Jessica, the owner, checked in with me which I really appreciated! We discussed working with a trainer and now that it's reopened, she truly is a "trainer matchmaker" and cares that you are getting the most out of her gym! I'm there 3 times a week and feel great!! Everyone at the gym is taking the reopening very seriously - feels safe! We need to open again!
Mel Zomorrodian -
You can’t find a more caring, loving and supporting person than Jessica! I got to know her while FunXional fitness was under construction almost 4 years ago. She welcomed me with open arms and from that day on she became family. When you walk into FunXional fitness, its like no other gym. Everyone is very friendly and welcoming and that is all because of Jessica and the standard she set with everyone. The gym is set up in a way that both the clients and trainers won’t feel like anything is missing. Jessica’s smile when you walk into the gym makes everyone’s day brighter. I’m grateful and happy to have her in my life.
Kim Hale -
I met Jessica as she was opening up, expanding and remolding FunXional Fitness several years ago. I immediately felt a connection and a true friendship developed instantly. I am really not one to join gyms, due in part that I prefer the outdoors to exercise, hike, jog, bike, etc. and because gyms are expensive. I joined despite the unwillingness because Jessica gave me the encouragement and motivation to work out, get fit and feel the amazing energy of FunXional Fitness. I was hooked.
The most important aspect of maintaining my membership was because I support small business, I support women owned business and FunXional is the most beautiful gym I have ever been to. I hope in the months ahead we can meet again.... I miss her all the time.
Zoa Keith -
FunXional Fitness has been a revelation for me and Jessica Vitanza has so much to do with that. From the moment I walked through the door I felt taken care of, and throughout this Covid experience there has been no one more communicative or more vigilant about keeping us, her extended family, connected and informed.
You will not find a better local gym than FunXional Fitness, nor will you find a better human being than Jessica Vitanza. She is the best at what she does.
Cathy Dore -
PLEASE KEEP FUNXTIONAL FITNESS OPEN!!!!!!!
The gym is outstanding and has been a mainstay of my overall self-care regimen for the past several years. If possible, I would continue to pay my membership if it were ethically and legally possible throughout the closure due to Covid-19. Unfortunately, I am not sure this is possible. Therefore, let’s do whatever is possible to keep our gym alive and thriving!
There are truly no words to adequately describe how grateful I am to have this oasis in my life. Please keep FunXional Fitness open for safety, health and peace!
Mrs. Jeannette Tashjian -
As a proud member of FunXional Fitness I would like to take this time to speak about the amazing owner, Ms. Jessica Vitanza.
She is one of the most dedicated, compassionate, hard working business owners I have ever met. Her private gym is beyond spotless and her team is educated and professional. Jessica has created a safe haven for all to workout and through this we are able to keep our immune systems strong and our brains healthy and happy. I am so proud and honored to know her!
Chris Lawson -
Imagine that you were going to design the perfect space for gathering and sharing with friends, family, and those people you love the most in this world. A unique place where you could rejuvenate your mind, body, and spirit in a friendly and supportive environment.
Jessica Vitanza has done that with FunXional Fitness.
I’ve never met a business owner who genuinely respects and cares for every single customer, vendor, and team member the way she does.
She cares deeply about everyone and that caring extends well beyond the gym into their outside lives.
She’s been there for me and always has time to listen, share encouragement, make connections, and lend support.
Jessica is an uncommon person and she has created an uncommon community where members can grow, pursue the best version of themselves, and thrive!
FunXional Fitness is a gift that Jessica has given to the city of Burbank and it would be an absolute tragedy if it went away. Please help support this amazing person and this amazing business.
