Last November (2018), the Hernandez family was thrown into turmoil when Sandra (mom) unexpectedly experienced a major seizure. She had no prior medication conditions. She was rushed to the hospital and while in the ER, she suffered a devastating stroke. Four days later Sandra underwent surgery to remove a brain tumor, which seems to have been the underlying cause of her medical troubles.
Sandra's recovery has been extremely slow and very painful. One side of her face is in constant, excruciating pain and she suffers from intermittent loss of feeling in one leg. Her doctors predicted she might never walk again, but Sandra is a fighter and, when possible, she walks with the assistance of her family and a shepherd's stick.
The trauma of the experience had deeply affected the whole family. Sandra's husband works long hours but income is very tight. Pedro, her oldest son (early 20s) has put college on hold to care for his mother and take care of his 15-year old sister and 10-year old brother. He is a dedicated care-giver, taking his mom to all of her medical appointments and administering her medications and therapies. He is truly holding the household together.
The Hernandez family recently learned that they must leave the home they have rented for the past twelve years. This has been another devastating blow to them as Sandra requires stability as she continues to recover. They hope to stay in the Conejo Valley so that the younger kids can stay in their schools and in the community they know as home.
