On January 17th, one of Ike Wood’s dreams came true. At just 13 years old, Ike is one of only 40 boys chosen to join USA Field Hockey's U16 (Under-16) Men's National Squad. The funds raised in this campaign will help offset the cost of travel from Syracuse, NY to Chula Vista, CA for Ike to train with the U16 Men's National Squad once a month for the remainder of the year.

Isaac (Ike) Wood  began playing field hockey when he was in elementary school, learning the game by practicing with his sister who played on the Varsity team at her high school in Endwell, NY.  Ike fell in love with the sport, and his love for the game grew as it was nurtured by his sister, her team, his youth league teammates and the Varsity Field Hockey coach.

Ike continued to grow as a player when he joined CNY Field Hockey Club, a premiere developmental/high performance field hockey club located in Central NY. With his teammates from CNY Ike enjoyed mixed competition at tournaments and competed in the USA Field Hockey National Indoor Tournament in Lancaster, PA.

In February of 2016 at age 12 Ike aged out of mixed competition and played for the first time with a men’s team at the USA Field Hockey Indoor National Tournament in Richmond, VA.  His performance earned him an invitation to join East Coast High Performance Club. In addition to practicing with ECHP in Pottstown, PA, Ike also regularly practices and plays with Syracuse Field Hockey Academy and Syracuse Field Hockey’s Kai-Zen clinics. In May of 2016 he competed in his first major tournament, the California Cup International Field Hockey Tournament, popularly known as Cal Cup.

Like other boys who play fied hockey in NY, in September 2016 Ike was forbidden to play with his school district's high school team (Fayetteville Manlius outside of Syracuse, NY) by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Section III Mixed Competition Committee. In their ruling, the committee decided, "Since there is a place for boys to play on the club/regional scene, there should not be boys playing at the high school level." Ike has continued to grow as a player despite limited options when it comes to playing and practice time.

The funds raised in this campaign will also help support Ike's ability to participate in test matches nationally and abroad and bring him one step closer to his ultimate dream--playing on the Men's National Team at the Olympics. The Junior National Squad is dedicated to the young men who want to play field hockey competitively at the national level, like Ike. Ike is proud to be a part of the U16 Squad. Please support our efforts to #LetIkePlay and help him reach his dream of becoming an Olympian.
