Let’s get Hudson a new bike!
Jackie and Brian received a phone call no parent wants to receive: “I was hit by a truck and I am hurt. The driver did not stop. Should I call 911?”
Hudson, their 16-year-old son, was riding his mountain bike on East Orchard Mesa on Saturday, September 4th at 7 PM when he was hit from behind by a white truck traveling at a speed of at least 45 mph.
The impact crushed the back of his bike, spun the bike perpendicular to the road, and launched Hudson 12 to 15 feet where he landed on the side of the road on his back. His helmet’s interior was shattered but luckily saved him from a traumatic brain injury and possible death. The accident left Hudson with a broken foot, likely a torn MCL and meniscus in his knee (waiting for MRI confirmation), and road rash. His bike is most likely totaled and his injuries will prevent him from participating in this year’s mountain bike and marching band seasons at Palisade High School. As you can imagine, Hudson is devastated.
That’s not the worst part.
It was a hit-and-run. The driver did not slow down or stop!! They left Hudson on the side of the road not knowing whether he was dead or alive, a fact that haunts Brian and Jackie to the core. But, while incredibly angry and in disbelief, they are grateful that Hudson survived. And they know he will be ok and will soon be back to biking and marching alongside his classmates.
And that brings me to the reason for this page.
Hudson isn’t the kind of kid to give up. His family persistently saved for that bike for two years and had just received it. He was so proud. Racing is his passion and he was looking forward to a great season. Hudson’s bike and plans may have been destroyed, but his spirit has not. Once he is medically released, Hudson will once again pursue his passion.
But, he will need a new bike.
Brian, Jackie, Hudson, and little brother Quinn are as down-to-earth as they come. They are so kind and consistently give to their community and this planet. They aren’t the type of people to ask for anything. They are givers. But people want to help! Bicycle Outfitters reported that many individuals have already called wanting to leave money towards the bicycle. So despite their reluctance, Brian and Jackie have agreed to a GoFundMe page where all donations may be gathered in one place.
So, let’s do this! Any donation will help and is much appreciated. Let’s give Hudson a bright spot in this unbelievable and disappointing situation.
Thank you so much in advance!!
Amy Carlton
(P.S. If donations exceed the funds needed, the family will donate the remaining monies to Grand Valley Youth Cycling, a non-profit 501c3 middle and high school youth development cycling team based in Mesa County, Colorado.)
