Let's Get Laura Purkey A Delivery Van
Donation protected
My name is Janel Hovde and I have the privilege of knowing and working with Laura Purkey. If you haven't met her, meet Laura Purkey, mother, substitute teacher, and advocate to our neighbors experiencing houselessness/homelesness.
KATU did a great write up about Laura in December. Here is an excerpt from that that write up about some of the work Laura does:
KATU Coverage December 2019
"No matter the season, you can always count on Laura Purkey for lunch in downtown St. Johns. She's in the same spot every Wednesday at noon, handing out free food in the plaza.
"There's a lot of need, and I really feel like it's our responsibility to help people who are in need," said Purkey
This isn't Purkey's job, and she's not volunteering for a nonprofit. She started doing this a little over a year ago simply because she knows people are hungry. But it's not just their bellies Purkey is worried about, as people crowd around her van, desperate for supplies to keep them warm and dry this winter. Purkey hands out tents, sleeping mats, boots, and tarps, assuring people there's enough to go around."
Laura has been tirelessly doing this week in and week out all out of her passenger van. There just isn't enough space for receiving, moving, and distributing all of the food and supplies she hands out.
So, let's help Laura purchase a used delivery van. We are looking to raise enough funds to cover the cost of the van, possible repairs, insurance, as well as materials to modify it so it can be used to its fullest extent.
We are all one paycheck, one catastrophe, one health crisis away from finding ourselves joining our houseless/homeless neighbors. And the next person Laura reaches out to help could well be you or me.
Please consider donating to this great cause. Your support is greatly appreciated!
Humbly,
Janel
