99th Street Elementary is located in Watts, California it is among the highest population densities in Los Angeles with 17,346 people per square mile.
91.8 % of our students are on free breakfast, and lunch. Our school also provides supper to these students as well.
We have recently started to shift the conversations at our school to teaching students how to be goal setters. At 99th we believe that every student has the opportunity to succeed. We believe that our students will be the next great generation and change the mindsets of the people who believe they are at a deficit. We strive to be the best educators we can be for our students. Great things are happening at 99th Street Elementary and I am beyond blessed to get to carry out some of this amazing work.
As many of my friends and family know I have taught kindergarten for the last 2.5 years and have loved every minute of it! Next year, I have decided to transition in to being a first grade teacher. Reflecting on the past 2.5 years of my teaching career I have 3 words that come to mind: growth, compassion, and success. I have grown as an educator in ways that I have never imagined possible in such a short time. I have students that reading above grade level, and 88% of my class passed the End of Year Math Application assessment with the highest score possible. I deeply love my students, and their families. I couldn’t imagine a day without any of them. Honestly, it breaks my heart in to a million pieces when I hear what some of the families I work with are going through. I want my students to have some of the same opportunities that students in smaller, higher income districts have. I am very thankful for my friends and family who help me achieve this. I have spent probably 2 months worth of wages in my time at 99th Street buying supplies, donating backpacks, and etc. for my students.
The next step to improving the lives of my students is to improve the classroom technology. I have a deep desire to add a Promethean Interactive Activpanel (interactive whiteboard) to my classroom. Promethean Boards create a more active and engaging learning environment and make learning fun for the teachers and the students! This board allows a teacher to use technology without using a projector. It can mirror any device, and can display student work just by holding a IPad over their work. It allows students to play fun interactive learning games as a class and even has the capably of saving your whiteboard notes for future reference.
