Hi, My name is Jason and I am Fundraising for Alan Abel because he is a great guy who touched my heart over the years. I met Alan because he came to the gym at lunch on a regular basis. We quickly liked each other and frequently spoke to each other about our happenings which mostly consisted of family, friends, and work. I respected Alan from the start, that was 17 years ago we met.
When he stopped coming to the gym I asked around and found out that Alan was diagnosed with cancer. I know he isn't the type of guy to ask for help so I reached out to him and told him I was doing this for him. I know he needs help and I also feel it is what needs to be done! Alan worked at O'Briens Grocery for many years and I'm sure many others are wondering how he is doing. I will do my best to keep this updated.
I asked his daughter for some words and this is what she wrote.
This past month our lives have been turned upside down. Our dad Alan was having some stomach pain on Christmas. A couple days later he decided it was time to go to the emergency room where the doctors ran a cat scan
On December 28th he received the phone call informing him he had a large mass on his pancreas suggesting cancer that has also metastasized to other organs.
January 2nd he saw the gastroenterologist who confirmed that the mass is indeed cancer as per blood work and imaging. The doctor then ordered a biopsy to see exactly what type of pancreatic cancer it was. The following day he developed a severe blood clot in his leg preventing him from being able to walk, stand or bend his leg which prevented him from being able to return to work. This man has worked at his place of employment for 36 years and has only missed 2 days of work EVER, so that was very hard for him. The blood clot broke off and moved into his lungs. He was hospitalized and the biopsy was performed early.
On January 12th we received the heartbreaking news the pancreatic cancer is stage 4 adenocarcinoma that had spread to his liver and stomach. Due to the cancer being metastasized and very aggressive …..it is inoperable. The oncologist says he expects 2 months of life left with him if we choose not to do chemotherapy. If we do choose to do the chemotherapy it can hopefully buy us more time if his body is able to handle it.
January 25th was his first day of chemo.
Although we wish we could have notified everyone personally, he is loved by so many it has become hard to notify all the people who's lives he has touched. It has been very hard for us to come to terms with and find the words to go public with this devastating news, but the time has come.
If you have been fortunate to have him in your life or even crossed paths with him you know that he is the most kind, genuine, selfless, and compassionate man that is loved and looked up to by so many. I don’t think we can find a person that has anything bad to say about him as he lived his life as such a humble and good-hearted man who is kind to all. I know how many people truly cherish this man and will be affected by this news. We (his daughters), our brother and our mom are beyond heart broken. We can’t wrap our heads around terminal cancer within the greatest man we have ever known.
Alan is the rock of our family and our saving grace and his family needs him.
Please keep us all in your prayers and say an extra prayer for our dad Alan
