Everybody who has ever met Austin knows he is a special kind of person. He is smart, funny, hardworking, kind and a hell of a talented bare back bronc rider. On Monday Jan 15 2024 he had what has been described as the worst bare back riding accident in recent history at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado. The event was televised and his family watched helplessly while the incident occurred. He was rushed unconscious to Denver Hospital for life saving treatment and is now stable with a long list of injuries.
His injuries include:
- A hematoma at the top of his spine which is being monitored very closely.
- A main artery on the left side was severely damaged cutting off all blood supply to his left arm resulting in surgery to put a stint in which is working and has restored blood flow.
- His spinal plexus nerves are severely damaged, still unsure to what extent, leaving him with no feeling or mobility in his left arm. Time will tell if this will regain function or if nerve grafting will be done to try to restore the use of his arm.
- C7 vertebra was broken
- Multiple hip fractures
- Nasal bone broken
- As well as stitches and other minor injuries
He is in stable condition and in good spirits, when he’s awake and trying to keep us from worrying. He has a long road ahead but he’s strong and determined and we know he will do whatever it takes to overcome this. Austin is a humble man and would never reach out for help. Let’s all rally around him to help get him back on his feet and get him through this extremely difficult time.
