Give Courtney Perry Coccaro a fighting chance

My dear friend of 39 years, Courtney Perry Coccaro, is facing a devastating health crisis. Anyone who has been blessed to have crossed paths with Courtney knows her heart shines as bright as her personality. My hope is to help ease some of her burden and provide her with much needed grace. Dear friends,

At the end of May, I was admitted to the hospital and diagnosed with stage 4 liver disease/liver failure. When I entered the hospital, my liver function was at 7%. The medical staff saved my life. Yet, the ultimate grim news came last week from a liver specialist. I asked what I could expect as far as prognosis. The answer keeps ringing through my head: “one to five years.”

My mortality was not something I had given much thought to. I thought I was invincible. Of course, since that day in May, I have stopped drinking. Regrettably, I can’t change my past decisions. Today, my health is my sole focus. I’m doing all I can to give myself a fighting chance.

The physical effects of end-stage liver disease and medications are taking a toll. I am no longer able to work and had to change insurance. I am applying for disability, which may take a year or more to receive. My insurance will not cover a liver transplant. Regardless, I am applying to get on the list, which can also take 6 to 12 months. There are a lot of hoops to jump thru, but I am not going to give up.

I never thought, at 50 years old, I would be in this position. Facing this battle has given me so much to reflect on. Life is really about the relationships we make, and I am fortunate to have many enduring friendships. I am grateful for the support and love I have received. You all mean so much to me, and I thank you.
