Let's Help Daniel Fight Chronic Kidney Disease
Dear Friends,
Many of us are fortunate to have an abundance of blessings in our lives. Unfortunately, this isn't the case for a lot of people. Please read below and help us save a boy's life! Thanks in advance and God Bless!
On behalf of our dear friend Deleene and her son Daniel, I am organizing this fundraiser. Deleene is a selfless woman who dedicates herself to serving and caring for the residents at Mustard Seed Communities in Kingston Jamaica, and most importantly in her home, raising her 4 sons. Deleene is an incredible single mom , who has done an amazing job of caring for her son Daniel, who has been battling Chronic Kidney disease for the past 12 years. Raising kids is hard, raising a child with a chronic disease while working full time with a smile on your face is unfathomable to most of us. Daniels condition has worsened and Deleene is in need of our help to get her son Daniel the medication that is needed to keep his kidneys working well enough to keep him alive. If this does not work his next treatment will be a kidney transplant. Unlike us, Deleene, and most people in Jamaica do not have medical insurance to pay for hospitalizations and prescription drugs and they have no treatment for quite a few chronic medical conditions, including transplants. The weekly medication and blood tests is very expensive and costs $203.00 USD a week or $30,700 JMD. Donations to this Gofundme will pay for his medication and blood tests for the next year. Please join me in donating whatever you can for Daniel and Deleene. God Bless YOU!
Hi, my name is Deleene and I am Daniels mom. Daniel was diagnosed with a kidney disease, nyphrotic syndrome on October 25th 2009, 3 days after his father's funeral at age 4. Daniel has spent most of his childhood in and out of the hospital. He would just start swelling mostly in the face and I would take him to the hospital. He was placed on a high dose of steroids which helped. He was also given plasma which is a form of blood transfusión. Daniel did a biopsy in 2013 which showed that he had Minimal Change Disease, or MCD. MCD created the state he is currently in, where his body cannot maintain its necessary proteins. It was then that he was given a new medication cyclophosphamide. At that time Daniel was 9 years old. He spent another 3 years at Bustamante Hospital for Children, spending more time in the hospital than at home. Once he turned 12, he was transferred to University Hospital. While being treated at the University Hospital they discovered that Daniels was part of the small percentage of those with kidney disease that are steroid resistant. Because each time they would try to ween him off the medication to the smallest amount he would relaspe. On the 7th of August this year he was admitted to the hospital yet again because he was relapsing. After running more tests, they decided that it would be best to start him on a new medication which is Microphenolate. Microphenalate is a immunosuppressive drug used primarily to help prevent the body from rejecting a kidney transplant. In Daniels case they are using it for his Kidney disease to hopefully prevent the need for a transplant.
In addition to the new drug, Microphenalate, Daniel takes 24 tablets per day ... he takes Prednisone, Omerprzole, Calcium D caltrate, Almedopine, Enalapri. The Micropheonlale is very expensive and that my reason for wanting to do a go fund me for him. It costs $22,500 JMD ($149.00USD) for a one week supply and an additional $8, 200 JMD ($55.00 USD) for weekly blood tests to monitor the kidney function. I honestly cannot afford it on my own as I am a single mother. Daniel has developed a lot of additional complications which he developed while taking steroids. He has hypertension, he has delayed puberty and sickle cell trait.
Even though Daniel has faced many challenges through the years, he continues to do very well in school, to be strong in his faith, maintains a positive spirit and a bright smile on his face , and continues to shine. We are praying that this new medication will prevent him from having to have a kidney transplant and he can resume a somewhat normal life outside of the hospital. Any contribution that you can make will be blessing for Daniel. We thank you in advance for your gifts, thoughts and prayers! Deleene & Daniel
