If you know Joan, you know she is nothing short of amazing. She is also a very private person, so this is not an easy thing to do — but we feel is necessary, so that this is one less burden to worry about while she fights this battle.
Nine years ago, Joan fought and won her battle with Stage 3 Colorectal Cancer. But not without a few battle wounds. Yet, you never hear her complain.
This year, just a few days after Mother’s Day, in May 2019, after a trip to the ER, Joan was once again diagnosed with an aggressive type of Uterine cancer. During that trip, she developed Sepsis through her IV site which required a much longer stay. (And more bills to come)
On July 5th, Joan had a total Hysterectomy. They believed to have removed all of the tumor. Because of having so much damage from prior radiation (9 years ago) there were many complications. There was an additional emergency surgery to correct a perforated bowel as well as a short stay in the ICU. She also had to undergo physical and occupational therapy. She remained in the hospital for 9 weeks and 1 day.
During this time, they also found that the cancer had already returned.
Her treatment plan is Chemotherapy, which has started and she had maxed out on radiation 9 years ago, so chemo will be her only option. Her Oncologist is optimistic and we follow Joan’s motto of Pray, Hope and Don’t Worry and take everything one day at a time!
Joan continues to overcome and rise above whatever is put in her path, so this should be no different! But the bills are mounting and while she tries to make small payment arrangements with each one, all of those small payments are adding up. Medicare just isn’t covering it all and much is out of pocket. Being on a small fixed income, every penny counts.
If you know this woman, she is often compared to a saint. She always tries to do the right thing, is always kind and she always puts everyone above herself.
We just want her to be able to focus on her fight and recovery and not worry about these financial burdens. Any little bit will help! Even if it’s a prayer!
