Tragically, this home was destroyed in a recent fire, leaving Wayne and his family grieving the loss of a place that symbolized their history and unity. Wayne Nelson, a beloved and dedicated member of the Pasadena and Altadena communities. Wayne is currently facing overwhelming challenges due to the devastating Eaton fire.

Everyday is a struggle against overwhelming pain, yet his indomitable spirit remains unbroken. His unwavering determination and positive outlook continue to inspire everyone around him. Wayne faces significant challenges in his health and work. His struggle with spinal stenosis and sciatica left him unable to walk for a week because he was working tirelessly to ensure that his loved ones in Altadena were safe and to salvage anything he could at the time. That same night, his business suffered critical damage from fierce winds, leaving the interior permeated with a persistent smoke smell. Wayne is determined to clear out and restore this vital community space, but the journey ahead is steep. His inability to work as he once did has added to the everyday stress and burdens he faces.

On January 6, 2019, Jonas Nelson, Wayne Nelson’s youngest and last born child of seven, disappeared without a trace, leaving his family in unimaginable pain. The last place he said he would meet his father was at the home now burned down home, a place filled with memories, love, and the hope that one day he would return. But now that home is gone, destroyed in the fire, taking with it the last tangible connection to where they believed Jonas might come back. The heartbreak of losing both Jonas and his Childhood home that tied them to him is devastating. Despite the years of uncertainty, Wayne and his family have never stopped searching, never stopped hoping.

Wayne’s Early Life: A Foundation of Strength
Wayne was born in 1952 in Cleveland, Ohio, to Irene and Lionel NelsonHe grew up in a close-knit family as the second of six children. In the early 1960s, his family relocated to Altadena, California, where his father built the family home that became the heart of their lives for over 60 years. In 1972, when Wayne was just 20 years old, his father passed away. As the second oldest, Wayne stepped into a leadership role, helping his mother raise his younger siblings. This responsibility helped shape Wayne into the compassionate, hardworking, and generous person that so many people admire today.

Building a Legacy: Community and Entrepreneurship Wayne’s entrepreneurial journey began over 30 years ago with determination and grit. He started by selling T-shirts out of the back of a van and worked tirelessly to grow his business. Eventually, he opened an affordable clothing store on Lincoln Avenue in Altadena, California. For decades, this store was more than just a place to shop—it became a cornerstone of the community. Wayne provided jobs, mentorship, and opportunities to countless young people, giving them a chance to build brighter futures. He is widely admired for creating a space that embodied resilience, kindness, and community spirit. In addition to running his store, Wayne worked for the Pasadena Unified School District and spent years mentoring young men in a group home, instilling in them the values of respect, responsibility, and hard work. His generosity extended beyond his local community, as he traveled to countries like Haiti and Africa to provide aid and support to those in need.

Wayne is the proud father of seven children and grandfather to five. As a father, he taught his children to be natural-born leaders, entrepreneurs, and business owners. He instilled in them the values of resilience, kindness, and determination, all while fostering a deep love of family. His children and grandchildren look up to him as a source of strength and inspiration, and he continues to lead his family with unwavering love and devotion.
