Let’s Honor Coach David Smolinski
Anyone who went to Armor Elementary School between the 1970’s and the early 2000’s, knew Mr. Smolinski. If you played sports at Hamburg High School, it’s likely you knew him, too. Certainly, if you played baseball for the boys varsity baseball team during that time you played for Coach Smolinski and probably knew him as “Coach Smo”. Sadly, Coach Smo was one of the many people claimed by the pandemic this past winter.
In Honor of Coach Smolinski and to recognize how much he did for so many students and athletes at Hamburg High, a number of his former players and friends have decided that it would be appropriate to do something to recognize his contributions to the Hamburg School Community and the Hamburg Boys Baseball program.
After communication with Hamburg Athletic Director Patrick Cauley and current Boys Varsity Baseball Coach Derrick Hill, this GoFundMe page has been set up to raise money to complete a project for the benefit of the school and its’ athletes, and which would result in the naming of the baseball field after Coach Smolinski.
Since there are many things that could be helpful to the Hamburg Baseball program, we’ve decided to take a little different approach. Rather than identify a specific project, our plan is to simply set a fundraising goal of $25,000, with the idea in mind that, if we succeed or even surpass that amount, we might even be able to do something beyond that original goal. There’s even been talk of using the money we raise as “seed” money for a grant to build a fieldhouse that could be used not only the athletic teams, but physical education classes, and even other school and community events.
If we fall short, there will certainly be other needs that the Hamburg Baseball team can address. But, if we make the kind of effort Coach Smolinski always asked of his players, we just might be able to do something really special to honor this man who has been such an important part of the Hamburg School and Sports community.
