Saving Udny Green Kirk together
Donation protected
Communities throughout Scotland are praying they can somehow save their historic churches as the Church of Scotland faces having to sell off buildings as a result of declining membership.
Many of these churches are an important part of Scotland's rich cultural and architectural heritage and the wellbeing they provide to the communities they serve goes far beyond religion.
Villages throughout Scotland have lost their banks, post offices, their libraries and their pubs and now the church is one of the last community buildings standing. Every one of these buildings is of real value for communities and their loss has a significant impact on village life.
My family and I decided to act and do something about this and put our savings into purchasing, rescuing and restoring the beautiful Kirk in the village of Udny Green in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. So far, we have spent many months working hard on addressing issues with the building; replacing rotten windows, removing rust, repairing walls and railings, plaster and painting and making sure the building is dry and watertight.
We just couldn't stand by and see yet another beautiful building be left to decline into ruin, converted into apartments or something that would exclude the community.
The Kirk is now in safe hands and as its new custodians, our intention is to set up a Not-For-Profit NGO that will ensure the Kirk will remain central both as a beautiful village icon and a place of real value to the communities it will continue to serve.
So far we have been very much 'hands on' and have done what we can ourselves but there is certain work we simply can't do and we need to bring in others to work on the necessary roofing, heating, electrical issues, repairs to the clock and bell for example and of course they need to be paid for doing this work - this is the purpose of this fundraiser.
Every penny of your kind donation will go towards making sure the Kirk is repaired and made ready to 'earn it's keep' into it's future through community events, working with local schools, weddings and funerals and other life celebrations.
We will create a website for the Kirk shortly which will document all the work we are doing and we will post the weblink here so you can see what an important impact your help is making.
Thank you for your generous support, please be assured this is an impactful project that will have a real positive effect on many people in so many ways and together, we can make it happen.
If you would like to drop in for a chat and a look around you are more than welcome, just get in touch.
Thank you
