Let's support José Juarez for his health

José Juárez is an indigenous Totonaco migrant from the Sierra Norte de Puebla, Mexico, from the community of Tuxtla, Zapotitlan. He migrated to the United States in 1992 at the age of 23 and is currently 57 years old, residing in Clifton, New Jersey. He has lived and worked between New Jersey and New York City as a traditional indigenous healer, herbalist, and advocate for his Totonaco culture.

As a traditional healer, 22 years ago he founded Leecatzin, an herbal store where he sells herbs, conducts consultations to diagnose physical and spiritual illnesses, and prepares natural plant-based medicines. José's healing knowledge stems from his maternal lineage; his mother was a healer, passing down a diverse array of wisdom related to traditional Totonaco medicine, healing practices, and shamanism. His mother, Maquchina, was a healer in the Totonaco language, and his grandmother, Xsqogyona, was known for candle lighting, invocations, and prayers. From the age of six, he began working with his mother, who was also a "Palhmana," a masseuse and midwife. Since childhood, his mother brought him along to aid in her healing practices for the sick.

During his life in the United States, José has been an integral member of our migrant community, providing healing support to various individuals and working spiritually to address intergenerational trauma and collective well-being. In 2007, he founded the bilingual community radio program in Totonaco and Spanish, "Lo profundo de México" (The Depths of Mexico), with the aim of promoting human rights for indigenous migrant communities in the United States and showcasing the cultural richness of ancestral peoples like the Totonaco.

Recently, José was hospitalized due to chronic pneumonia, in addition to suffering from long COVID and fibromyalgia. His health is currently in a delicate state, as his lungs are retaining water, and doctors have recommended absolute rest for at least a month – a real tough endeavor for a working-class migrant.

José requires funds to cover his housing rent, his herbal business expenses, as well as medical costs and appointments – facing a complex situation because of his lack of public health insurance due to his immigrant status. José has no family in this country but has a handful of friends who are rallying for solidarity during these difficult times.

Jóse Juárez es un migrante indígena totonaco de la Sierra Norte de Puebla, México, originario de la comunidad de Tuxtla, Zapotitlan. Migró a los Estados Unidos en 1992, a la edad de 23 años; actualmente tiene 57 años y vive en Clifton, New Jersey. Ha vivido y trabajado entre New Jersey y la ciudad de Nueva York como médico tradicional indígena, curandero, hierbero y promotor de su cultura totonaca. Como médico tradicional, hace 22 años fundó Leecatzin, una botánica donde se dedica a vender hierbas, hace consultas para diagnosticar enfermedades físicas y espirituales y prepara medicinas naturales a base de plantas.

Los conocimientos como curandero de José provienen de su linaje materno. Su madre era curandera y a través de ella heredó diversos conocimientos en torno a la medicina tradicional totonaca, el curanderismo y el chamanismo. Maquchina era su madre, que en su lengua totonaca quiere decir curandera, y su abuela Xsqogyona, “la que prende velas, la que hace invocaciones y rezos”. Desde que tenía seis años comenzó a trabajar con su mamá quien también era Palhmana: sobadora y partera. Desde muy niño su madre lo llevaba con ella a realizar sus curaciones a personas enfermas.

Durante su vida en Estados Unidos, José ha sido un integrante clave de nuestra comunidad migrante ayudando en procesos de sanación a diversas personas y trabajando espiritualmente para sanar el trauma intergeneracional y el bienestar colectivo. En 2007, fundó la radio comunitaria bilingüe en lengua totonaca y español “Lo profundo de México”, cuya finalidad es promover los derechos humanos de las comunidades migrantes indígenas en los Estados Unidos y mostrar la riqueza cultural de los pueblos ancestrales como el suyo: el totonaca.

Hace unos días José fue hospitalizado a causa de una neumonía crónica, además de padecer de long covid y fibromialgia. Actualmente, su salud se encuentra muy delicada, ya que sus pulmones están reteniendo agua y, por tal razón, los médicos le recomendaron tener reposo absoluto de al menos un mes, lo que para un migrante de clase trabajadora es casi imposible.

José necesita dinero para cubrir sus gastos de la renta de su vivienda y su negocio de botánica, además de los gastos de sus medicinas y citas médicas, lo que se complica ya que no tiene seguro de salud pública debido a su estatus como inmigrante. José no tiene familia en este país, pero sí cuenta con un puñado de amigos que pedimos se solidaricen con él en estos momentos tan difíciles.
