Lewis Hero Flex Fund

Welcome to my son’s story. We need your help to make Lewis’s dreams and his aspirations, a reality. With your help, this will become achievable.

My son Lewis, who is now 16 years old, was born with a rare condition called ‘Poland Syndrome’. For Lewis, this means he was born with his left arm and hand considerably smaller than the other one and without a pec major. His hand only had 2 digits which were webbed together.

Following an extensive search to find a surgeon, Lewis underwent his first operation at 3 months old. This was the first of roughly 12 operations in order to improve Lewis’s movement and function. Over the years, Lewis has had hand reconstruction as well as muscle and tendon transfers from other parts of his body.

Whilst these operations have made some improvements, he has reached the limit of what can be achieved through surgery. Now, at 16, as he moves into young adulthood, he has aspirations to be a firefighter and become an independent and self-sufficient adult. The hero flex would play a huge part in making this a reality.

Like all young adults, Lewis enjoys going to the gym, water sports and riding his bike as well as being a member of the local fire cadets. Frustratingly, for Lewis, he is restricted by what he can do which impacts him physically, his confidence and his all round well-being. Having the hero flex, and some of the amazing adaptions, will completely change his life. Not only will he be able to engage fully with these activities, but it will open up a world of opportunity that up until now he has not thought possible.

Like all wonderful, life changing things, the hero flex comes with a cost. Having gone through the initial process with Open Bionics and discovering that Lewis is a suitable candidate, I am now asking for your help. I need to raise the last £3000 for the hero flex attachments. As his mum, I will strive to raise this money, and to anyone who contributes, either by donating or sharing my post, I will be eternally grateful.

I'm raising money through The Open Bionics Foundation, and any donation will help Lewis in funding his Hero Flex. Any extra donations will go towards supporting another person in need. Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to me.
