My sister, Alexis, is 21 years old and was diagnosed with breast cancer on January 31st, 2020. She is a full-time college student attending Wesley College in Dover, Delaware. Lex is a junior and aspires to be a physical education teacher with a special education focus. She will be a great teacher because she loves little kids. Since being diagnosed in January, she has had countless doctors’ appointments throughout the state of Delaware and into Pennsylvania. While attending all of these appointments and undergoing many procedures, she has still managed to attend and kick butt in her 6 classes plus a lab. She is determined to stay on track in school so she has been working ahead whenever possible. On top of the classes, she is preparing for her senior season on the field hockey team as well as a yearlong student teaching experience.
To date, she has undergone a double mastectomy with the hope of removing any chance of the cancer spreading further into her body. It is hard to process that my 21 year old sister has stage 2 cancer. Presently, an amazing team of doctors at UPENN are working to harvest her eggs so that Alexis has multiple options for having her own family one day. In the coming weeks, chemotherapy will start. She has a long 5 months ahead of her. It will be a true challenge, but I have no doubt that her determination will enable her to be the left back on the field next fall.
Coronavirus has created many obstacles and extra stress- my mom was not able to be by her side post surgery (Facetime was as good as it got) and she was sent home a few hours after it in order to limit possible exposure. The local fertility doctor’s office closed their doors so she had to find a new doctor willing to take on a time sensitive case (chemo can’t start until this process is complete). There have been so many challenges, but luck always lands on Alexis’s side. So far, we have found ways to overcome every obstacle.
Sisters are born with a unique relationship. Challenges force you to look at the situation a little differently. In our case, Alexis’s courage assures me that she will be a winner. #Lexstrong
