Lexi's Chance @ IVF-Breast Cancer
Donation protected
Hello there! My name is Brittany Luciano and I am Alexis's (Lexi's) younger sister. I am beginning a GoFundMe campaign on my sister's behalf and this is her story.
On July 8, 2016 Lexi was diagnosed with Stage II breast cancer. Her treatment includes a bilateral mastectomy that will occur on August 5, 2016. Four to six weeks after her surgery, she will begin 8 rounds of chemotherapy (AC-T), followed by radiation, and then finally breast reconstruction surgery. Lexi has a long road ahead of her, but my sister has been such as inspiration to me for her admirable strength and positivity to BEAT her cancer from the moment she was diagnosed.
For those of you that may not know Lexi personally, she takes pride in being strong and independent. It is very difficult for her to ask others for assistance, as she has a natural role of helping others- not only in her profession as a nurse practitioner, but as a loyal caring and supportive friend and family member. Lexi often puts others needs before her own and is known to make sacrifices in order to see others happy. One of Lexi's first jobs in healthcare was as a nurses aide in a maternity ward. I know she hopes to love, support, and care for children of her own one day.
Unfortunately, chemotherapy is a requirement for Lexi's return to health, but it comes at a high cost- it can negatively impact her fertility. She does have the opportunity to protect her chances of preserving her fertility prior to starting chemotherapy in two months (September 2016). It was devastating to find out that my sister not only has a diagnosis of breast cancer and will need to undergo a drastic life changing operation, medical procedures, and now is at risk of losing the chance at becoming a mother due to her diagnosis. It is also unfortunate that most insurances do NOT even cover the cost of IVF in order to assist a woman at having the chance to protect her own fertility. No disease should have the right to rob a woman of her ability to have a child! Traditionally, the cost for IVF is over $11,000 but Lexi has an opportunity to receive her treatment at a discounted rate of $5,800 for the procedure and $400 every six months after the first year for storage fees. This is where you can help!
A cancer diagnosis comes along with unexpected physical, mental, emotional, and financial burdens that hit you all at once and do not always give you ample time to plan and prepare. Fertility preservation is a time sensitive part of her treatment path, seeing as it would need to occur before she can receive chemotherapy. I am reaching out to all of you in order to make this dream become a reality for my sister. Any contribution you are able to make will be greatly appreciated by myself, my mother, and my sister. When Lexi's treatments are over, she plans to give back to the community by supporting other breast cancer patients with the same opportunities to protect their fertility so they do not need to feel helpless from their diagnosis!
