Baylor College of Medicine's LGBTQ+ student organization, BCM Pride, is working together with The Montrose Center of Houston to create LGBTQ Youth Street Intervention Kits. There are an estimated 1.6 to 2.8 million homeless young people in the United States. Of these, up to 40% have been estimated to be LGBTQ+ children and youth, often as young as 13 or 14 when they become homeless due a myriad of factors, not the least of which is trouble finding love and acceptance at home. This equates to hundreds of thousands of LGBTQ+ adolescents and teens on the streets, with up to 2,000 homeless LGBTQ+ youth in Houston alone. These kids often don't have homes simply because of how they identify and who they love. We want to help show them that they are loved, supported, and totally awesome just the way they are, and that their identity should never hold them back from achieving their goals.
BCM Pride and The Montrose Center are collaborating to create "street intervention kits" to help homeless LGBTQ+ youth in Houston. These kits will be delivered to needy youths via the Montrose Center, and BCM Pride needs your help to fund more kits!
Each kit includes:
-Food
-Clothing
-Toiletries
-A young adult novel with an LGBTQ+ protagonist
-A letter of encouragement from a LGBT+ or Ally BCM student, staff, or faculty.
-Info about discounted health services and STI prevention/treatment options
Each kit costs $30. No donation is too small and every bit helps. Please, help homeless LGBTQ+ adolescents and teens in Houston. Give what you can, share this page, and spread the word! #PridePacks
