LHS Cheerleaders to Cheer Camp!

Hi, my name is Robyn Guzman. I am the head coach of the Junior Varsity and Varsity cheerleading teams at Lawrence High School. I am also a Lawrence High School alumna. I live by our Lawrence mantra, “Pride, diversity and tradition”. As a first time cheer coach this past school year it broke my heart to see so many of our traditions dwindling away. When I attended Lawrence our cheer program had the opportunity to attend cheer camp for 4 nights and 3 days in Pennsylvania. This cheer camp is run by the National Cheer Association (NCA). At camp athletes learn the fundamentals of the sport including stunting and dancing. With our community losing its pee wee league, our athletes are reaching the Junior Varsity and Varsity levels not knowing the basics which should’ve been learned at very young ages. I have seen how this has dampened their experience this past season. We come across teams that are extremely advanced and talented. There was even a time where my team felt intimidated and didn’t want to cheer at a game. They weren’t as confident as they should’ve been! They are great kids and deserve the chance to reach their highest potential. Their experiences can be greatly altered if they are given the chance to go to cheer camp over the summer. I went all years of my high school career and can say it truly shaped our team, created life long bonds and memories - as well as excellent content to bring back home and perform on our home field! The cost has gone up greatly and is $320 per athlete. I have 31 athletes between my two teams. That costs us over $9,000, and we will need to pay for our transportation there. Since it is a newly formed team, we haven’t had time to fundraise and are really seeking help from our community to better their experience, improve skills, boost confidence and morale and just give these kids something they truly deserve! While they are novice/beginner teams, they are a hard working group and I could only imagine how much better they’d be after attending camp this summer.
