Roberts Bio:
Cobb County Police Lieutenant Robert Dorsey will retire on July 25, 2020 after serving the community for over 26 years.
Lieutenant Dorsey’s Commitment to service began in 1985 when he joined the United States Marine Corps and proudly served his country. After his enlistment, he worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigations in the records division and went to college at night, completing a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Public and Social Services. Lieutenant Dorsey worked for six years as a deputy for the Cobb County Sheriff’s office before moving to the Police Department.
Lieutenant Dorsey began with the police department in 2000. Over the years, he has served as an officer, sergeant, lieutenant and investigator in precincts 2, 3 and 4. He has worked in numerous specialized units including Domestic Violence, VIPER (a violent crimes unit), MCS (the Marietta-Cobb-Smyrna drug task force), Cobb Police Motor unit (motorcycle unit) and Special Operation Vehicle Fatality Investigations.
Lieutenant Dorsey has been recognized for acts as a police officer and as citizen of the community. He was given an award by the Veterans of Foreign Wars for his active pursuit of a fleeing felon that was firing on the police car during the pursuit. He was also recognized by Colonial Bank for catching a bank robber. On a stop for a traffic violation, Lieutenant Dorsey’s keen interviewing skills allowed him to identify and arrest a murder suspect from Louisiana. Not in the line of duty, Lieutenant Dorsey was called to a neighbor’s house because her father was having a heart attack. Lieutenant Dorsey performed CPR, reviving the man. He was given a life saving award for this act.
Lieutenant Dorsey has served the community by working neighborhood security in Brookstone, Willow Point and Chattahoochee Plantation. He is also director of security for Atlanta Country Club golf course and the Vinings Village Home Owner’s Association.
Lieutenant Dorsey recognizes the importance of being a community mentor. He has participated in Shop with a Cop, read to students in school classes, spoke at Career Day presentations, built Lego League table for robotics teams, provided information for student research projects and served Christmas breakfast for the homeless. Several years ago, Lieutenant Dorsey was honored to be invited to a young man’s Eagle Scout Badging Ceremony. He met this young man while doing his weekly part time security patrol at Caribou Coffee. They had multiple conversations and discussed the ways of the world. The young man invited Lieutenant Dorsey as his mentor.
Lieutenant Dorsey’s dedicated service and passion for helping the Cobb County community will be missed.
