Life Saver Fund: Paying Medical Bills for Patients -Lebanon

The economic crisis in Lebanon is preventing the population from accessing healthcare services. The devaluation of the local currency and the spiraling inflation have led to an increase in the prices of essential goods, including medications and medical equipment.

Hospital charges have gradually increased throughout the crisis, but they have been dollarized starting last week. At the same time, salaries are still stagnant and paid in LBP, making them significantly less valuable. According to UNICEF (2022), more than 50% of the population can't afford their required medications, and 34% of children cannot access healthcare.

The National Security Fund (NSSF) and the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) used to cover 85% to 90% of the hospital fees for Lebanese patients, while now, both are barely covering a minimal amount, leaving the patient with around 90% of the actual expenses. “Amid the crisis, the NSSF and MoPH are also struggling financially and have reached their limits,” says Farah Nasser, MSF deputy medical coordinator.

In response to the presented situation, the Lebanon Emergency Medical Fund (LEMF) campaign has been launched. The outcome of this campaign will help secure a medication, ensure the cost of a lifesaving surgery, or simply enhance someone’s access to healthcare.
