Life Saving Surgery for Jean

Family & friends - Do you remember the time Jean VandenLangenberg stopped by with a hot bowl of booyah just because? Do you remember when she stopped what she was doing to help you without even a second thought? Do you remember when she bought you a bus pass because you couldn't afford it? Or loaned her car because you didn't have one? Or brought you loads of wood to keep you warm through the winter? Jean is always the first person to help others, give the shirt off her back - now it's time for us to help her.
In 2017, they found a nodule in her lung on a CT scan. They have been monitoring this nodule for the last 3 years without change, until June of this year when the CT scan showed the nodule more than doubled in size. The doctors ordered a PET scan and subsequent biopsy. Her insurance wouldn't give the hospital an answer on coverage, forcing us to wait weeks to have the PET scan, which they ended up denying as a pre-existing condition. She went ahead with the procedures, agreeing to pay it out of her own pocket.
The biopsy showed that she has adenocarcinoma in her left lung (i.e. lung cancer) and the course of treatment is to remove the top lobe of her lung. The surgery was scheduled for September 14th. The preparation was complete, she was mentally prepared, hadn't eaten, bathed in the special soap and was in the car on her way to the hospital.... and then the phone rang. It was the hospital. The insurance denied her surgery for lung cancer. Absolutely devastated, she drove home to sit and wait. Can you imagine hearing you have lung cancer and your insurance denies your life saving operation? I sped over to her house and started the appeals process with the insurance. She talked to the hospital and they were able to reduce the cost of the procedure to $28,000. We decided to reschedule the surgery without an answer on our insurance appeal (which they said would take 30-60 days to get an answer).
Surgery was now scheduled for October 20th. 36 sleeps from the original surgery date and 81 sleeps since her abnormal CT scan. 81 days!! All due to waiting time from her insurance. Bring us now to October 14th - 6 more sleeps. Insurance denial of the appeal. A horrible day. The surgery needs to be pushed by another 28 days. AGAIN. New date, November 13th or 105 sleeps from the abnormal CT scan - more than 3 months since she heard the word "cancer".
Here's where all of you come in - please help us to fund her operation! The payment of the surgery should be the least of her concerns during this time, leaving more energy to focus on healing. She has 3 kids and 8 grandkids that absolutely love, admire, and need her.
Loving God, I pray that you will comfort Jean in her suffering, lend skill to the hands of her healers, and bless the means used for her cure. Give her such confidence in the power of your grace, that even when she is afraid, she may put her whole trust in you; through our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.
Love,
Kristin Hilbert (Jean's daughter)
