Lifeline for Ms. Janice – One of H-SC's Finest

In February 2021, Hampden-Sydney and greater Central Virginia, like much of the United States, experienced a devastating ice storm that left thousands without power and caused widespread damage.

Hampden-Sydney College weathered the storm and the days that followed mostly unscathed.  Amid the aftermath of the storm, however, one of our most dedicated staff members fell victim to a severe car accident brought about by the accumulation of roadway ice.  Ms. Janice Braxton suffered serious injuries when her vehicle lost control and flipped several times over.  Still recovering from her injuries, she has not been back to work at Hampden-Sydney since the accident two months ago.

Ms. Janice has been a mainstay at Hampden-Sydney for years.  Students, staff, and younger alumni most likely know her as one of the most vibrant personalities among the staff at Pannill Commons.  In addition to her daily role serving meals to our campus community, Ms. Janice also works as a custodian for the Buildings & Grounds department in the daytime–the care and attention she pays to maintaining the Brown Student Center are incomparable.  Even still, she finds time for her community and her beloved family.  A woman of inexhaustible strength, Ms. Janice marks every moment at Hampden-Sydney with a warm demeanor, a smile, and full-throated laughter.

We wish Ms. Janice a speedy recovery so that we may see her around the Hill again soon.  For now, though, her return is still uncertain.  Let's take a moment to help Ms. Janice–a fixture in our community, a loyal supporter of the College, and a role-model to our young men–and relieve some of her burdens during this challenging time.  She's been our strength.  Let's return the favor.
