Lifesaving Chemo Treatment for Virna

Our dear cousin Virna Peña Moreno was diagnosed in December 2018 with a rare disease Progressive Systemic Sclerosis. Systemic sclerosis is a disorder that affects the immune system and mistakenly attacks healthy tissues in the body. This strange autoimmune condition produces an excess of collagen in the body, and as a result, it can injure and harden vital organs such as the heart, digestive system, lungs, kidneys, and all the skin. Following her diagnosis and under the supervision of her immunologist, Virna began chemotherapy treatment in December 2018. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic and the unreliable health system in Venezuela, she was forced to suspend her treatment, and her digestive system was severely affected. But the advance of the disease is notorious. For the past month, Virna has been unable to consume solid food and has suffered from constant vomiting, heartburn, acid reflux, and difficulty swallowing. There have also been drastic changes throughout her skin. The disease has created white lumps, sores on the tips of the fingers and toes, and pain, stiffness, and inflammation of the joints. Her hands have been completely disabled. Virna has been an exemplary and very hardworking person and has always been there for her family. She has raised her son alone and, despite being the principal caregiver of her mother, who has been in a vegetative state since September 2017, she has taken the first phases of her illness with great courage and humility. To stop the damage that the disease continues to cause in her body and to prevent pulmonary fibrosis, which could be fatal, Virna URGENTLY requires chemotherapy for the next six months, in addition to consultations, medications, therapies, and laboratory exams. Due to the high cost that this merits in our country (Venezuela), the humanitarian crisis increasing and, the precariousness of the social security system, VIRNA CAN NO LONGER CONTINUE WITH JUST SPORADIC ASSISTANCE FROM FRIENDS AND FAMILY MEMBERS. Nuestra querida prima Virna Peña Moreno fué diagnosticada en diciembre de 2018 con una rara enfermedad llamada Esclerosis Sistémica Progresiva. La esclerosis sistémica es un trastorno que afecta el sistema inmunológico y ataca por error los tejidos saludables del organismo. Esta extraña condición autoinmune produce un exceso de colágeno en el organismo y debido a ello, puede llegar a lesionar y endurecer órganos vitales como el corazón, el sistema digestivo, los pulmones, los riñones y toda la piel. Inmediatamente después de su diagnóstico y bajo la supervisión de su inmunólogo, Virna inició un tratamiento de quimioterapia oral en diciembre de 2018, al cuál reaccionó positivamente. Lamentablemente, la pandemia y la gravedad del sistema de salud en Venezuela la obligaron a suspender dicho tratamiento en marzo de 2020 y debido a ello, el avance de la enfermedad ha sido notorio, especialmente en los últimos tres meses. Durante el último mes, Virna no ha podido consumir alimentos sólidos y ha sufrido de constantes vómitos, reflujo estomacal, acidez gástrica y dificultad para tragar. También ha habido cambios drásticos en toda su piel. La enfermedad le ha creado tumoraciones blancas, llagas en la punta de los dedos de las manos y los pies, además de dolor, endurecimiento e inflamación de las articulaciones. Sus manos han llegado a estar completamente incapacitadas. Virna ha sido una persona ejemplar, muy trabajadora, ha estado siempre presente para su familia, ha levantado a su único hijo sola y a pesar de ser la principal cuidadora de su madre quien se encuentra en estado vegetativo desde Septiembre de 2017, ha llevado las primeras fases de su enfermedad con mucha valentía y humildad. Con el fin de detener el daño que la esclerosis sistémica sigue causando en su organismo y para prevenir una fibrosis pulmonar, que podría llegar a ser fatal, Virna requiere URGENTEMENTE la aplicación de quimioterapia inyectada durante los próximos 6 meses, además de consultas, medicamentos, terapias y exámenes de laboratorio. Debido al alto costo que esto amerita en nuestro país (Venezuela), donde el sistema de seguridad social es sumamente precario por no decir inexistente, la crisis humanitaria es cada vez mayor y donde todo es extremadamente costoso, VIRNA YA NO PUEDE CONTINUAR SOLAMENTE CON LA AYUDA ESPORÁDICA DE AMIGOS Y FAMILIARES.
