This is the case of Vartan, a terminally ill cancer patient amidst a deteriorating social, political, and economic crisis in Lebanon. Financial support is needed to pay the medical expenses and help him recover.
Who is Vartan?
Vartan is the loving husband of Hasmig Sarkis, the caring father of Vicken, Vasken, and Vahe – his 3 sons, and the indulgent grandfather of his 2 granddaughters. Vartan is a 67-year-old Lebanese Armenian who has faithfully worked all his life to provide the best he can for his family, and to make sure his children get the education they need to have better chances at life than he had.

Medical Emergency
Last month, Vartan was diagnosed with cancer and is terminally ill. Despite a countless number of tests, medical doctors from the best hospitals in Lebanon and abroad were not able to identify the source of the Cancer, which has spread throughout his body. The Cancer has affected the functioning of his kidneys as well, making chemotherapy, the only viable treatment option, a very challenging possibility.

On Friday the 14th of January 2022, Vartan experienced unbearable pain and was rushed to the hospital at 4:00 AM. Medical tests showed that he had a hole in his stomach which required urgent surgery. Following surgery, further testing showed that he had also acquired COVID-19 and started to show symptoms. He was transferred to the isolation chamber within the Intensive Care Unit. Vartan is still at the hospital under surveillance to recover).
Finances
Vartan’s family has been very supportive of him, visiting him whenever possible, and securing the medical expenses and other needs to the best of their abilities. The hospital has recently informed them that the subsequent procedures will cost an additional 8,000 USD. This amount is needed for surgery and ICU expenses.

Securing this amount is very challenging and burdensome on his family due to the situation in Lebanon. For the last 2 years, Lebanon has been facing a severe economic crisis, a crumbling banking sector, hyperinflation, and political instability. These have led to the devaluation of the Lebanese Pound by around 2000% against the USD (1 USD was 1,500 LBP and is now 30,000 LBP), robbed inhabitants of their savings, increased unemployment to around 40%, and left the Lebanese unable to access basic needs, including medical care.
