Life-Saving Procedure for Basil

I'm raising funds to cover the cost of veterinary care for my cat, Basil. He is just over 1 year old and loves strings, Q-tips, and forehead kisses. This morning, I noticed that he was struggling to urinate and my partner brought him to the veterinarian ASAP. He was referred to an emergency vet and was immediately brought in to treat a urethral blockage. The initial procedure has been completed successfully, and he will need to stay in the hospital for another 2 days for monitoring and diagnosis.

Our current estimate for his care is between $1,700 and $5,200. We have currently been charged the average between the two estimates, approximately $3,500. Additional procedures might be needed as his care progresses, bringing the total closer to the upper end of the estimate range. We were able to put the balance on Care Credit, meaning we have 6 months to pay the balance in full before interest is applied. We are under considerable financial stress, as we are about to move into a new apartment. Our current (slumlord) landlord is suing us in Housing Court for past due rent, which we were withholding due to poor living conditions, disrepair, and the ongoing financial stresses of the pandemic. Paying him back will clear our accounts of the rent we have been saving, so having Basil in the hospital is more than we can currently afford.

I don't expect this fundraiser to travel far beyond my circle, but I have receipts and documentation to back up all of my statements above that I am happy to send to anyone who asks. All funds will primarily be used to pay the balance for Basil's veterinary care. Any additional funds will be used for medication, food, or other aftercare needs once he is discharged from the hospital. After that, if there are leftover funds, they will be used to cover past-due rent.
