Support My Educational Journey in Prison

Dear Friends and Family,

As many of you know, a challenging chapter of my life is about to begin. On April 8th, I will start serving a 42-month prison sentence. This period of intense reflection and soul-searching has led me to a decision that not only aims to transform my time of confinement but also sets a foundation for a brighter future: I’ve decided to pursue a bachelor’s degree while incarcerated.

The last two years have been an overwhelming of civil and criminal trials, during which the government forfeited my assets and savings and I lost almost everything.

I’ve exhausted my 401k retirement savings, and my credit score has taken a significant hit. Now, faced with the reality of my situation, the path to higher education in prison seems narrow and fraught with financial hurdles.

Unfortunately, without external assistance, my dream of furthering my education seems just out of reach.

I’ve never been one to easily ask for help. Yet, in this moment of my life, reaching out feels not only necessary but vital. Education, for me now, represents more than just acquiring knowledge; it’s a beacon of hope, a way to productively use my time, and a strategy to maintain my sanity amidst the restrictions and isolation of confinement.

After thorough research, I’ve chosen to enroll in Adams State University, one of only five institutions offering programs tailored for prison studies, known for its accessibility and supportive environment.

The total cost to complete my bachelor’s degree is approximately $25,000 for 120 credits hopefully including used textbooks. While I am actively applying for scholarships, options are severely limited due to my age of 52 and the unique circumstances of studying from prison.

Additionally, federal assistance or grants do not cover prison education, placing another barrier on my path to personal development and rehabilitation.

Como muchos de ustedes saben, estoy por enfrentar un desafío enorme en mi vida. El 8 de abril empezaré a cumplir una sentencia de 42 meses en prisión. Este tiempo de reflexión profunda me ha llevado a una decisión importante: quiero transformar estos años difíciles en un camino hacia un futuro más esperanzador. He decidido empezar una licenciatura mientras esté encarcelado.

Estos últimos dos años han sido una montaña rusa de juicios civiles y penales, en los que perdí casi todo lo que tenía. Ya me gasté todo lo que tenía ahorrado para el retiro y mi crédito bancario está por los suelos. Ahora, viendo mi realidad de frente, veo que el camino hacia una educación superior en prisión está lleno de obstáculos económicos.

Lamentablemente, sin una ayuda adicional, mi sueño de seguir estudiando se ve casi imposible.

Pedir ayuda nunca ha sido lo mío. Pero ahora, más que nunca, siento que es necesario. Para mí, estudiar es una luz de esperanza, una forma de hacer que el tiempo pase de manera significativa y una estrategia para mantenerme en pie a pesar de las restricciones y la soledad de la prisión.

Después de buscar mucho, elegí inscribirme en la Universidad Estatal Adams, una de las pocas que ofrece programas de licenciatura diseñados para quienes estamos en prisión, conocida por ser accesible y por brindar apoyo a sus estudiantes.
