Light Up Molatedi Village School with Solar

We began visiting the Molatedi village near the Madikwe Game Reserve in northeastern South Africa. Part of the trip included a visit to the village school. The school asked for “treats” for the children. Rather than just “American” candies, several brought toothbrushes, socks, and small Frisbees. The goal for our next trip is to take Solar Lights for the students of the village school.

How we got started.

We have returned to the Molatedi Village several times and plan to visit this October 2024. Over the years, our safari guide has been having a house built by her brother and father. On our last visit, thinking of a “house warming” gift, my husband and I gave her outdoor solar lights. She thanked us with tears, telling us she didn’t have electricity in the house and she would be putting them in a bucket outside her door then take them inside so her children “can read at night”.

Almost all homes in the Molatedi village do not have electricity. Patience still doesn’t have electricity in her house, now completed seven years. There are 160 students in the school that go home to a house without light.

On our last visit, I had a Luminaid solar lantern purchased at my local R.E.I.. I ended up leaving it with one of the guides. The solar lanterns are desperately needed for the students to use in their homes. Conventional flashlights require expensive and mostly unavailable batteries.
