Support Lilly's Knee Surgery
Donation protected
Hi we are trying to raise money for our dog Lilly. She is 2 1/2 and has a ruptured right CCL and a partial tear on her left. We are trying to raise the difference between what the overall cost is and what our pet insurance caps at ($7500).
CCL injuries (similar ACL tears in people) are very common in young large breed dogs. They have a lot of youthful energy and it causes quite a bit of strain on the joints and ligaments in their bodies due to their increased weight verses the strength of the joints. Regular dog behavior such as running, jumping, or turning sharply while playing tag with other pups can cause this type of injury.
Lilly developed a partial tear/strain on her back left leg around Christmas time 2023 and we have had her on medication, bed rest, and slow reintroduction to physical movement (as recommended by her main veterinarian). We had been very diligent on rest because one of the main concerns is injuries to the healthy leg due to overcompensating for the lameness in the opposite leg. She had been slowly on the mend for her left leg after a few visits and assessments from the vet over the last 2 months.
Unfortunately, as predicted by the vet , Lilly was feeling better and must have moved too quickly or too sharply and fully tore her CCL on her back right leg- the good leg. We now have one partially injured leg (which is being over used and getting worse) and one completely injured leg that is no longer weight bearing.
She was taken into emergency for assessment and X-rays, the prognosis was expected - the only option is surgery. When the vet showed the X-ray of her legs her freshly injured one shows a full disconnect between the 2 bones in her leg, ligaments absent. Due to her size and the type of surgery she requires a surgical specialist and the emergency team provided information for 3 different ones in and around the Calgary area. The quote is approximately $5000/leg and both will need to be done at separate times to allow healing and to prevent loss of muscle mass from months of being fully immobile.
We are already $1300 into the maximum through her insurance and they will only cover 90% of the cost of any medical intervention due to injury. We are looking for help to come up with the cost difference for the standard price and for the physio that will be required post surgery. The success rate for surgery is 90% and due to her young age she is expected to make a full recovery.
This is the sweetest loving dog and we are 100% prepared to do anything to keep her happy, healthy and hobble free. Anything you can provide to help would be greatly appreciated.
