Lily's Volunteer Trip To Sri Lanka

When I was 8 years old, I was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis in my Pancreas, causing me to have Chronic Pancreatitis over the last 15 years. Unfortunately, I also average about two hospitalizations per year with this condition. All this time in the hospital has really made me appreciate the work that nurses do, so it was only natural that I would want to grow up to become a nurse!
After taking off a year and a half to deal with my medical condition, I am FINALLY going into my senior year in the School of Nursing at the University of Michigan...(GO BLUE!!). This past winter was my first semester back from being sick and I am so excited to report that I was able to achieve a 4.0 GPA!!!
So now that I am healthy and thriving, I feel like it is my turn to give back. Through a program called "Work the World," I would like to travel with other nursing students as well as medical, pharmacy, dental and mid-wifery students to Sri Lanka for 6 weeks. Through this program, we would have our clinical placement at a local hospital in Kandy, Sri Lanka. This hospital has specialties in ICU, General Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics, Gynecology, Orthop edics, Psychiatry, Cardiology, Oncology, Neurosurgery, Pediatrics and Trauma. This trip would give me the opportunity to help people that are less fortunate and to aid this small community by providing them with an extra set of hands to help with the patients. I want to be able to help the people of Sri Lanka just like the nurses at home have helped me so much over the years. This is my chance to give back to people that really need it and where I feel I will make a significant difference. This trip would be an invaluable learning experience for me as I would be able to take so much of what I experienced into my practice here at home.
As I have been getting ready over the last few weeks, I received some unexpected news that my original funding for the trip fell through. I am now looking for help to pay for the trip. I am seeking $7,000 dollars which will cover my flight, program cost, immunizations and living expenses for time while in Sri Lanka.
