Lily's road to recovery
Donation protected
Lily is a 16 year old girl that has suffered multiple injuries from a horse back riding accident last June. As she went to mount a horse and had one foot in the stirrup, the horse spooked and took off dragging Lily 50 yards. As a result, her spleen was ruptured, small tear in liver, broken rib, concussion, fractured foot, and a broken femur. Her femur was repaired using a plate and screws.
Now 7 months later, we found that the broken femur caused her peroneal nerve to completely sever. Lily was in therapy 3 times a week and was discouraged with not seeing any improvement. She is in constant pain and being treated with 4 medications for her pain. She is unable to walk. She hops, crawls, uses crutches, and a wheel chair for long distances.
Prior to her accident, Lily was very active and energetic. She was a competitive dancer, played soccer, and a cheerleader. Besides her physical abilities, Lily is well liked. She has a beautiful soul. She is kind, caring, and compassionate.
Her whole life has changed. She is no longer able to do the things she loved to do. She is now depressed and has a lowered self-esteem. Her hopes were to someday be a doctor and help others. Now she can't think past her injury and pain.
The Mayo Clinic has agreed to take on Lily's case. Lily needs to have a very complicated nerve graft surgery. This surgery will entail several trips from Duluth to the Mayo along with an extended hospital stay. This much needed surgery is going to have many expenses for our family aside from the medical expenses (which so far are covered) such as gas, lodging, loss wages, and food while we are at the Mayo to support Lily through her road to recovery.
Thank you very much for any support you are able to give.
Love,
Nicole
