Liminal Space SF- Our Trans-Centering Gallery
Don protégé
Provide critical funding for the launch and continuation of Liminal Space SF, San Francisco's first Transgender-centering art gallery.
Our artist collective is starting Liminal Space SF, San Francisco's first Transgender-Centering gallery in SOMA. During this time when people cannot gather, we are building out the studio's features to launch as a micro gallery and screening space for the community when it is safe to do so. In the black box theater the studio complex hosts we will be programming screenings. The goal of this space is to create opportunities in a city that has few for Trans artists.
As a community, we have realized that opportunities for emerging artists and curators to show work are extremely limited in San Francisco. Representation of Transgender artists is sparse, and for a city deeply intertwined in the history of the Transgender and LGBTQIA rights movement, we need more galleries for our voices and perspectives. New arts spaces for the Queer and Trans community are necessary for a thriving arts scene in San Francisco. In order for these opportunities to arise, we are creating Liminal Space SF, San Francisco’s first Transgender-Centering gallery for the Trans community and our allies to show artwork and new media. Liminal Space is located at a critical intersection that connects the Transgender Cultural District and the Leather and LGBTQ Cultural District, near 7th and Folsom Street, which will enhance both districts.
Currently the collective is working on some small scale renovation of the gallery and will have fixtures installed and electrical work done. San Francisco desperately needs new arts spaces to rise from the ashes, as many important cultural icons for the Queer and Trans community such as the historic STUD bar are vanishing in the night due to financial complications from the virus. Emerging curators are in a drought of arts spaces that are open and willing to take a chance on new work or a curator’s first show. In order to launch the careers of emerging artists and curators, a gallery like Liminal Space is necessary to carry the vitality of the culture forward- with the goal of creating intergenerational collaboration.
