Linda Andre's Legacy
Donation protected
My name is Alandra Markman and I am the son of Linda Andre and Allen Markman. Both were respected activists working for the civil rights of the mentally ill. My mother was well known for her tireless work to publicize the dangers of ECT (electro-convulsive therapy), including a book from Rutgers University Press called "Doctors of Deception: What They Don't Want You To Know About Shock Treatment." Linda passed away on September 2nd. I am looking for help to fund her burial, memorial, and archival legacy.
1.) Burial: We buried Linda on September 20th at Forest Green Park Cemetery in Morganville, NJ. We received some donations to cover this cost, but we still need funds for a headstone or marker. I would also like to reimburse one of Linda's friends who put some of the cost on her credit card. Anticipated costs: $2,500.
2.) Memorial: I will be hosting a small memorial dinner at a restaurant in Manhattan for those who want to celebrate her life. I will also be putting a public obituary online. Anticipated costs: $500.
3.) Archives: I am donating Linda's papers concerning her activism to the University of Massachusetts special collections on disability rights movements. This means moving more than 60 boxes of documents up to Amherst, MA, where they will be archived and made available to the public. Anticipated costs: $1,000.
