School: Mayoka Primary School
Priority Need: Ablutions (12 BATHROOMS)
Project Location: Mayoka Community, Tanzania
DESCRIPTION OF THE COMMUNITY
Mayoka is a rural community in the Manyara District of Tanzania, close to Lake Manyara. The community has a population of around 7,000 people. The layout of Mayoka village is Maasai mud-dwellings scattered around. There is no community ‘centre’, the only public infrastructure being a school and a clinic, both of which receive support from Africa Foundation. The Maasai people are primarily pastoralists and not many other activities take place here. There is no electricity or water supply to this village; and residents walk distances to fetch water from unsecured open sources.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Mayoka Primary School was established in 1973, and provides education from pre-school to Grade 7. Since its establishment, the school has received support from a number of generous donors and currently consists of 10 classrooms and an admin block. Through Africa Foundation, in partnership with andBeyond, two classrooms and teachers accommodation have been refurbished and desks (manufactured at andBeyond Lake Manyara Tree Lodge workshop) have been donated.
After free primary education was introduced in Tanzania, school enrollment significantly increased, especially in the poorer, more rural areas. This saw classes grow in size and pressure put on resources and teachers. The 2018 enrollment is 557 children (273 boys and 284 girls) with 8 teachers, creating a pupil : teacher ratio of 70 : 1.
Recently Africa Foundation supported Mayoka Primary School by fundraising for additional accommodation for teachers, with the goal of enabling the school to recruit more staff, who come from outside of the region, reduce class sizes and improve quality of education. Thanks to the generosity of our donors and andBeyond guests, the construction of 2 family houses is now commencing on the school site.
The other concern of that school that has emerged as a result of increased numbers is a shortage of ablutions to support demand. Currently the school has 12 ablution cubicles. According to the Department of Education empowering communities · enabling conservation February 2019 policy, a school of Mayoka’s size, needs to have 24 ablution cubicles. Africa Foundation proposes to construct an additional 12 cubicles to meet this requirement. The availability of another 12 ablutions will ease congestion among the children during recess time and allow punctuality for the next lessons. This should also allow more hygienic environment for the school.
FUNDING REQUIRED
The cost of construction of twelve ablutions at Mayoka Primary School is USD$ 8,612. Donations have already been received contributing to this project, leaving the current amount still to be raised as USD$4,910.
