Lindsay Bruns, Shark Attack Survivor, Fundraiser

Donation protected
Hi Everyone,
My name is Chelsea and I’m writing this on behalf of my best friend, Lindsay Bruns, 35, of Flower Mound, TX.

This is her shark attack story:
Lindsay was enjoying a family vacation with her husband and two young daughters in the Florida Keys. This particular location has been their safe haven, for many years, away from their busy life in Dallas. The Keys is a place they knew very well. This is where their family goes every year to escape and just enjoy family alone time of fishing and swimming.

On June 29, 2022, it was a normal family outing of swimming in crystal blue waters… Lindsay went for a swim and was attacked by a large shark. The species and size is unknown, however, the aftermath trauma that incurred is indescribable.

Luke was able to get Lindsay back into the boat. Her right leg was completely "mangled" and she was losing a lot of blood. Luke quickly found something to tie a tourniquet and set to work stopping the bleeding. He knew his wife needed urgent medical care and after getting the bleeding under control the best he could, started the 20 minute boat ride back to shore. On the way he called 911 and was able to coordinate with emergency responders at a local dockside restaraunt. Lindsay had already lost a great deal of blood and needed surgery quickly. She was taken by air ambulance to a trauma center where doctors got to work saving her life.

After hours of surgery the doctors were confident that she would live, but were unsure if she would be able to keep her leg. After the first reconstructive surgery they were hopeful that she would keep her leg, but Lindsay still needed a third surgery to complete the second phase of reconstruction. The doctors are now hopeful that she will eventually regain most function of her leg.

The road to recovery is just beginning and Lindsay is in good spirits and optimistic. The Bruns Family is thankful for the help of emergency responders, hospital doctors and staff, as well as those who have reached out and offered thoughts and prayers.

Lindsay, a Texas resident, is unable to leave the Florida hospital at this time due to her recovery. She and her family are greatly in need of financial support to help with hospital bills, surgeries, rehabilitation, and temporary living expenses out of state.

As Lindsay recovers, The Family kindly asks that you direct any media requests to the Jackson South Medical Center Communications Department.
