My name is Ariel and this amazing young lady and her family have been so close to my heart for the past 15 years.
Our nightmare began on Monday 6/26/23. Just weeks prior, Lindsey was celebrating her 21st birthday, filled with all the hopes and dreams that accompany this monumental birthday. Dreams, excitement, anticipation, and hope about the future. What will come? What type of future will this kind-hearted, loving Linsdey have? Then the nightmare began. Lindsey Mallon woke up with a painful right leg and a limp. She had never had any pain or issues prior to that morning. Her mom took her to an orthopedist the next day for an X-ray. The results indicated an abnormality in her right fibula therefore an MRI was ordered for the following Wednesday7/5 which turned out to be the worst day of their lives. After her 8:30am MRI the orthopedist unexpectedly called her mom at work approximately 3 hours later from a summer vacation with his family and broke the life altering news of suspected Ewings sarcoma. After 2 closed and very painful bone biopsies and multiple scans, Lindsey and her family were told that she had been diagnosed with the very very rare diagnosis of Ewings sarcoma on 7/12. This news has changed their lives forever. They are now part of a club that no parent ever wants to be a part of.
Ewing’s Sarcoma is a rare bone and soft tissue cancer that affects children and teenagers. Ewing Sarcoma happens when cells’ DNA change, creating abnormal cells that attack healthy tissue. Each year about 200 children and teenagers in the US are diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma, or about 1% of all cancers in children and adolescents under age 15, and 2% of all cancers in teenagers ages 15 to 19.
Lindsey, an aspiring dog groomer, lives in Saint Augustine, Florida with her mother, Jennifer, father, Sean, her Shih Tzu, Scully, and her 23 year old brother, Justin, who is currently torn between staying home to help Lindsey or leaving to pursue his dream of creating music scores for film and tv in Los Angeles. Her mother’s parents live locally and her Grandpa is fighting his own battle with terminal dedifferentiated retro peritoneal Liposarcoma. Her father's parents live in both Boynton Beach, FL and Mahopac, NY and her paternal grandpa is also battling a cancer called MDS.
Lindsey has already demonstrated tremendous tenacity, fortitude, and courage due to having learning disabilities which lead her to a job with AmeriCorps in Jacksonville/UNF as a student advocate for other students with learning differences. She has been a positive and admired role model as she has empowered challenged students to fight for themselves in the face of adversity.
Lindsey will be undergoing approximately 10 months of chemotherapy at UF Health Pediatric Hospital in Gainesville under the care of Dr. Lagmay and her team while having surgery to her right leg at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville under the supervision of Dr. Attia, Sarcoma Specialist and Dr. Wilke, Orthopedic Oncology. Jennifer will be driving approximately 1.5 hours every other week to Gainesville for chemo and staying in the room with Lindsey during those 2-5 (or sometimes 8 if a blood transfusion is needed) day stays.
Lindsey is in a battle for her precious life! Her family cannot live without her! Please consider helping sweet Lindsey as Jennifer needs to stop working during this time to provide around the clock care for her beloved daughter and best friend.
Monetary donations will be used for:
1)Travel and living expenses during Lindsey’s out of town chemotherapy including housing, food, gas, and travel
2)Co-pays for medical bills and medications
3)helping to keep the Mallon family financially afloat as Jennifer must stop working her full time job for the next 10 months
If you are unable to give financially, please consider the following ways to help support the family during this time:
1) Pray
One of the most powerful things that we can do for the Mallon Family is to support them in prayer. Please pray for God to strengthen and heal Lindsey’s body, for the Mallon family to have renewed energy and strength, for Lindsey’s doctors, nurses and therapists to be given divine power to aid in the process of healing as well as for financial provision throughout this difficult time and that our community will continue to show love to the Mallon Family throughout this incredibly challenging and painful time.
