Help New Mom Fight Stage 4 Cancer

Dear friends, family, and loving supporters,

I am starting this fund on behalf of my incredible sister, Lindsey Porter.

Lindsey has been the rock of our family since forever. She and her husband Nigel didn't have children of their own, but they have always been a huge and loving presence in the lives of my children and our brother's kids as well. They love them all as their very own. Then came the miracle. Lindsey was finally pregnant with the baby she prayed for for almost 20 yrs. In November of last year, one month after her 40th birthday, my sister gave birth to her daughter, Kami. Never has a baby been so wanted and adored, and my sister was living in a world of love and contentment. Until 2 weeks ago.

Lindsey had bad daily headaches for about a month and explained them away as we are prone to do. Finally, she saw the doctor and he ordered an MRI. On Friday, August 4th she received a call from the doctor's office telling her to go to the ER because they see masses in her brain and she needed to get a full body CT Scan. The results came back positive for stage 4 adenocarcinoma in her lung, with metastasis to her brain. The world as we know it came to a halt for her family, and of course, Lindsey can only think of how much her baby needs her and she needs to be here for her.

We have listened to the medical plan which includes brain surgery later this week to remove the large tumor, radiation and chemotherapy. The best drugs available for her type of cancer are relatively new and can be outrageously expensive, even with some insurance coverage. There are large deductibles, and copays, and like most couples, Lindsey and Nigel both need to work. Lindsey was an emergency room nurse for 16 yrs and has since been working as a Trauma Specialist. She was always a wonderful nurse and loved caring for others. She even took a 6 week leave of absence to care for our grandmother in a different state when she was dying. My sister cannot work right now as she undergoes treatment, which is what has brought me here.

No one wants to be in the position my family has found themselves in. Not only worrying about the disease itself, but worrying about the cost to actually help save her life. New worries about being able to make house and car payments, worries that were nonexistent 3 weeks ago. This is why I am creating this page. It's never comfortable asking for this kind of help, but I am asking... in addition to requesting your prayers, we are asking you to please consider making a financial gift to help with the escalating costs and needs at this stressful time. Update 08/18/2023: Lindsey is having brain surgery today to have the larger tumor removed that cause the swelling in her brain. Please keep my sister in your prayers.
