Lisa Prince Needs Your Help For Stroke Recovery

Donation protected
My sister Lisa Prince had a major stroke on September 9th. She is currently in St. Joe's in Guelph waiting to go into long-term care to continue her recovery. She has recently been discharged from the rehabilitation center of St. Joe’s. This unexpected health issue has come with some unexpected financial needs. We are reaching out for some help and support during this time.
Lisa is going into long term care with the hopes of one day being able to live in supportive living. She has right side paralysis and aphasia. She can understand about 90% or more of what is said to her and of what she reads. However, she has trouble saying what she wants to say and with writing. This is frustrating to her and sometimes to those who she is communicating with. She is an intelligent woman and she has a lot to share with others beyond the simple communication of sharing what her daily needs are. She has been working avidly with a speech therapist to gain some of these skills back. However, once she moves into long term care the speech therapy is no longer offered and would have to be done privately. Being able to communicate and write again is of the utmost importance to Lisa.
She has 2 University Degrees. One in early childhood education and the other in English. She always hoped to write a book one day. She often would send her poems into contests online and had started a writing group to help encourage herself and others who enjoy writing to write. She used to work the VON and work with children who had disabilities. This work ended when she started struggling with bi-polar and anxiety disorder. Life has been a struggle for her, but she has a huge heart and is a person who would give anything and everything that she has if you need it.
Lisa has a little bit of feeling back in her right leg and foot but will need further rehabilitation to continue that progress. She still doesn’t have a lot of feeling or any movement in her right hand and arm yet. This is challenging for her as she has knitted daily since she was 7 years old. I don’t remember a day that she has not had her knitting needles and wool with her. She knits on the bus, at family functions, is in a knitting group, and everywhere she goes. Knitting is therapeutic to her and she is very generous in what she knits. Often knitting scarves, dish rags, blankets, baby clothing, socks, mitts, and even sweaters which usually end up as gifts to others or given away. She is working hard on trying to learn how to crochet and knit using only her left hand when she is right-handed. She has had to learn how to use her left hand for many things already, feeding herself, brushing her teeth and hair, pretty much everything. Again, the physio and occupational therapy has lessened now that she has been moved to a room waiting for long term care. It used to be daily therapy and has now gone down to 2 or 3 times a week which will continue to be the schedule in long term care unless private therapists are hired to fill in the other days.
Lisa enjoyed doing art and had many groups that she was a part of using her artistic talents, writing and knitting abilities. She was also on the board at her housing complex. She enjoyed using her skills to participate and assist others.
On top of all the above health concerns and extra costs we must clean out Lisa’s apartment. Very little of her belongings will fit in her room at long term care where she is likely to be for the next few years while working towards supportive living. This has additional costs of renting a dumpster, storage fees for some personal keepsakes and belongings, plus paying rent/fees to 2 different places for the one-month overlap. Not to mention tons of travel, time off and hours spent packing things to keep, things to donate and things to get rid of.
A health crisis like this requires a lot of upfront time to take care of a loved family member and ensure their health is stable and improving which means taking the time off work. A lot of time has been spent learning about strokes and her health care needs, going to appointments, long term care places and viewings, banking for her, communicating to all parties who needed to be made aware with some guessing done here due to the communication struggles. Now that we have more information and a better idea of what Lisa’s current future situation looks like and her goals to work towards, we have come to realize that we need financial assistance to continue this road to recovery with Lisa.
We are asking for some financial assistance if you have some to offer (anything and everything helps). A generalized list of what the financial assistance will go towards is below. We are also asking for prayers for her and that all light workers send some reiki, love, light and healing to her. She is a daughter, a sister, a mother, a niece, an aunt, a friend and simply just an amazing person. She is only 52 years old and has so much more life and love to give to this world. Please help us support her the best way we possibly can and keep her in your thoughts.
We would like to thank you in advance, and we are very grateful to you for taking the time to read about my sisters’ situation, for all assistance offered and for sharing this Go Fund Me Page.

Financial assistance will go towards the following:

• Tools for additional therapy (i.e. ipad/apps for communication, wheelchair, books, therapy cards, etc.)
