Dylan Oglesby is my 10 year old brother.  Dylan had to have thyroid surgery to remove his thyroid and six nodules on February 27th at Memorial Hospital, which was thought to be cancerous. After surgery in recovery he had a seizure and he aspirated on vomit which caused him to have to be intubated and moved to pediatric Intensive care unit. When he aspirated he got aspiration pneumonia. His lungs were finally doing better and he was able to come off the ventilator and be moved to a regular room. After a few days went by we realized that Dylan was not able to talk or eat.  We talked to the doctor about it and the doctor realized that Dylan’s left vocal cord was paralyzed and stuck in the open position. On March 7th, Dylan had to go back to the operating room to get a therapeutic injection in his left vocal cord. This injection was suppose to help his vocal cord and the doctor said he would be able to talk after this. He would gag/cough on anything he would put in his mouth. He was released from Memorial hospital on March 13th. On March 15th Dylan was taking his medicine and he had a bad gagging/coughing spell that he was not able to come out of. He had to be rushed back to Memorial by ambulance, because he could not catch his breath. When he arrived at the hospital his oxygen level was very low and nothing was able to stop him from gagging/coughing. He had a chest X-ray done which showed he had aspirated and had aspiration pneumonia again. He was rushed up to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. When he arrived in P.I.C.U. they had a whole team waiting on him. They had a pediatric anesthesiologist intubate him. Dylan was in bad respiratory distress. The ENT doctor in Savannah wanted him to be extubated for them to look in his throat, but if anything was wrong with his vocal cords or nerves they would not touch it. On Monday March 18th we started the process to get Dylan moved to Wolfson Children’s Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida. Wolfson Children’s Hospital has a doctor that specializes in the throat nerves and vocal cords. During this time he was still on the ventilator. Day after day went by, and our family was hoping he would be able to be transferred but we had to wait for a bed to open up for him. Finally on Friday March 22nd Dylan was transferred to Wolfson Children’s Hospital in Jacksonville, by ambulance. He was able to be extubated on Saturday March 23rd. After they extubated him he had to be put on high flow oxygen. Later that night he had a seizure and started vomiting and aspirated a little and he was struggling to breathe so the had to put him on a CPAP. That was another scare because they thought they were going to have to intubate him again.  They worked very aggressively and put him on albuterol continuously. They did a chest x-ray which showed his right lower lung was not looking good at all. About a hour went by and Dylan was starting to breathe a little better so they did not have to intubate him. The next day he was able to come off the CPAP and be put back on high flow oxygen and his lung looked and sounded better. On March 27th the ENT did a scope on Dylan and found out that his vocal cords are stuck open, both are paralyzed and he had a few nerves damaged in his throat. Dylan is not able to eat or drink anything by mouth at all. Right now he is being fed through a NG tube in his nose. We are waiting on a surgery date for a G tube to be placed in his stomach so he can be fed. Right now we are still waiting on a plan from the ENT about his throat. We are very hopeful that they will be able to fix him. He is still not able to talk. Dylan is a very strong boy and has fought hard during all of this. He is still in Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Wolfson in Jacksonville.  Dylan's dad has missed a lot of work to be with Dylan during this difficult and scary time.  Anything you could give to help is greatly appreciated!   Please keep Dylan and our family in your thoughts and prayers!
