Shop with a Cop – 2024

Each year, the Livermore Police Department (LPD) partners with the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District (LVJUSD) for the annual Shop With A Cop program. This initiative allows LPD officers to "adopt" a young LVJUSD student in financial need and take them shopping for Christmas presents in early December. Donated funds give each student the opportunity to purchase gifts for both their family members and themselves, ensuring a brighter holiday season for all. LVJUSD staff identify and nominate students in need to participate.

The event will take place on a Saturday morning in early December. Selected students will meet an LPD officer in uniform at their school. All participating officers are donating their personal time to this program. After meeting their officers, the students are taken to a local Starbucks to enjoy a cup of hot cocoa. From there, they caravan to Walmart, where they are welcomed by the Granada High School band and student leaders from both Livermore and Granada High Schools.

The students then go on a shopping spree, selecting gifts for their families and themselves. Many students need encouragement to purchase something for themselves, as they often focus on practical gifts such as clothing, shoes, and bedding for their family members. After shopping, the students enjoy a breakfast prepared by the Livermore Police Department and, with the help of officers and volunteers, wrap their gifts before heading home.

The Shop With A Cop program is a cherished tradition for all involved. Officers look forward to participating each year, often reaching into their own pockets to ensure their adopted students can buy a bit more. Walmart and Starbucks have been dedicated supporters of the program since its inception.
