Liverpool and Slavery book for schools

2020 helped to reignite the desire of many people – young and old – to understand more about Liverpool's historic role in slavery and race relations. Taking inspiration from our colleagues in Bristol we are hoping to raise funds to curate a school textbook  on Liverpool and the Slave Trade as we feel that this is an essential story that has been overlooked for far too long . We hope a book and resource pack will give young people a window into the city's past and help young people understand and reflect upon how the legacy of enslavement and the impact of slavery still reverberates to this very day. Historian Laurence Westgaph describes Liverpool as the, 'quintessential city of slavery and empire’ and it is true that Liverpool and slavery grew symbiotically. Before the 18th century Liverpool was a small conurbation / fishing village, but the city boomed due to its involvement in the slave economy, which eventually led to Liverpool being referred to as the, Second City of the Empire. Profits from slavery seeped out across the nation as money was invested insurance companies, banking, railway infrastructure and stately homes etc. We very much hope that a book of this nature, targeted and curated for a younger audience, can tell this essential story of our nation's past and help them to become more tolerant, educated and respectful individuals.
