Elizabeth 'Liz' Hallas InMemoriam

Donation protected
In memorial of Elizabeth (Liz) Hallas; Mother of Danielle Hallas and Glam-mother of Julian Portieous.

Thank you for the outpouring of love and support during this truly difficult time of losing everyone's favorite mom Liz. My mother was diagnosed with acute Leukemia on December 22, 2016 after having some bruising that didn't seem to be healing and generally feeling tired and not herself. She had a blood transfusion that day, but continued to rapidly decline through Christmas and New Years, not making it to her next appointment on January 5th. I took her to the hospital via ambulance on January 2nd because she had began to have several fainting spells that day. My mother decided 35 years ago that she would refuse chemo treatment if she were to be diagnosed with cancer and stayed true to her convictions when she did. I have ALWAYS respected her wishes, and continued to do so. On January 12th 2017, at 12:30am, my mother peacefully took her voyage, with me by her side, and the extraordinary support of the palliative nurses in D9N unit at The Glen, in Montreal.

My mom's wishes were to be donated to science, to help in research and education, which I proudly did. She did not wish to have a funeral and I am respecting that wish as well. Something I would like to do is donate to the palliative care unit where she passed away, in some way, to help other families going through literally the worst moments of their life, be a little more comfortable during this time. We are in talks with administration to see if it's possible to donate big, reclining chairs for others like myself, who chose to move into the hospital when a love one became sick. We'll ask if they need anything for their family rooms or any other creature comforts available for us to purchase to offer some warmth to those families who need it, during their painful time in the unit. I know my mom would be so proud of this decision and we spoke at length about how beautiful the hospital was and how incredible the staff is there. I know this is the right decision. It feels right in my heart. It's the perfect tribute. Kindness, compassion and the kind of comfort my mom offered to SO MANY people throughout her life, selflessly. It would be a honor to extend that to lots of other people who have found themselves in a room, holding a loved one's hand, as they take their final voyage, like my mother did. It's the least I could try and do.

Please don't feel like you have to donate much. It's just a gesture and know that every cent will be beautifully turned into a comfort for someone else. We will update with our purchase plans and encourage you to spread this page to others who may be interested in helping.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Even in death, I want my mom's legacy to be that of strength, character, warmth and empathy. I think this is a beautiful way to do it. <3

With love and gratitude,
Danielle
