Help Logan get a life-saving surgery!

Logan is a Canadian rescue cat we swooped and saved as a kitten from someone who wanted to feed him and his sister to his snake, so even if we were just planning on having one more cat, we couldn't leave either of them behind and ended up with the cute duo.

Logan is very different from his outdoorsy sister and prefers a good book on a lap. He is also a very smart boy.
When it's food time, we play a game with him where he has to say a "word" to get his food. Often it's made up words or "Rawr rawr", but sometimes we get an "Auflauf" from him which means "stew" in German.

Over the past months his health has been declining and he couldn't keep his food down, so we took him to the vet. They did x-rays and diagnosed him with "diaphragmatic hernia" - basically his diaphragm has a hole and his bowels passed through and are now in the chest cavity. At first, the vet told us most cats live a long good life even with a diaphragmatic hernia, but it soon became clear Logan wasn't part of that statistic.

He will need surgery to have this corrected, but due to the nature and complexity of the condition, they are estimating that complications could easily double up the price, but the vet is confident that his chances of survival are good. He sent the X-rays to a specialist and got an estimate for this specialized surgery. He told us the cost would be between CAN$4000 & $6000 (I know, I nearly chocked too), and that complications could double that amount.

However, as of the 22nd of June 2022, we've had another appointment with a specialist; we have some news and two of them are good!

First, the sad news is that the surgeon specialist doesn't think it's congenital as we first assumed, but rather a traumatic diaphragmatic hernia, which means that he likely suffered from blunt trauma  at one point. When we moved to Edmonton almost 2 years ago, Logan ran out and disappeared for 3 days. We don't know what happened during that time, but it is quite possible he got hurt then and slowly, the hole became bigger, letting his bowels pass through.

The second piece of good news, which melds into the third one, is that after a more thorough examination, the surgeon specialist believes that complication risks are low which means the surgery fee may not be as high as our initially given estimate! As such, we have lowered the goal to reflect the estimated bill.

Logan has been miserable the last few weeks. He is hiding all day and hasn't been eating much or drinking. My wife has been staying home to ensure he gets his daily nutrients and stays hydrated with a feeding syringe as well as getting his pain and anti-inflammatory meds, but most pet owners know it's not an easy task for both parties involved! (The struggle is real)
He has lost a lot of weight, but still responds to affection. The only solution will be this surgery.

Please, help us fund Logan's surgery, so we can hopefully enjoy his company for many more years to come and once again hear him say "Auflauf" or "Rawr rawr" when he wants his food.

Any surplus or remaining sum will go to local animal shelters in Edmonton. We have chosen SAFE Team for their partnership with the Cat Cafe on Whyte Ave which helps improve adoption rates, as well as AARCS who regularly gets calls about injured animals. Their veterinary team ensures their recovery so they can find a new safe home.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Let's help Logan be a cool kitter again!
