Lois Mateer Memorial Fund

Dear Family and Friends,

We are setting up this fundraising account because many of you have asked for a way to donate to a non-profit in memory of our mom, or for a way to help out with the costs of our mom’s memorial. We are grateful for the love and support you have shown to our family! 

There are two options for donating:

1 - Give to the Music Department of Lois' church, San Marcos Church in Santiago Chile, for a special project.  Lois was constantly involved in the music program of her church because music and worship were her passions.  

2 - Give to Sam Mateer to help with Memorial costs.

It is with profound human sorrow that for now we must say goodbye to Lois Marion Peyton Mateer, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister & friend.  On Thursday, April 11, 2019, surrounded by loving family, Lois peacefully transitioned from this life into the loving arms her Lord Jesus.  While we are heart-broken and mourning the loss of such a special and deeply loved lady, a mysterious sense of peace and joy intermingles amidst our grief.  Sadness pulls at our hearts while the comfort of Lois bidding farewell to a disease ridden earthly body in exchange for an eternally perfect and healthy body brings us peace.  Earthly clothing is exchanged for brilliant white robes of righteousness as she stands embraced by her Lord.  Legs that no longer could support her on earth replaced by strong healthy legs carrying her as she dances on the streets of pure gold.  Her strong melodious voice for many years filled the atmosphere and our hearts with beautiful music in worship of God.  That voice, now fully restored, is free once again to express unadulterated praise and worship to her beautiful Savior in its fullest expression of love.    

Lois was born February 19, 1939 to Hollis and Marion Peyton.  Knowing from an early age she wanted to serve the Lord through mission work, she attended Moody Bible Institute in Chicago in preparation for her calling.  After graduation from Moody, Lois attended Northwestern University where she met the love of her life Samuel Andrew Mateer. 
 
Sam and Lois were united in marriage on September 1, 1962 in Port Huron, Michigan.

After completing their education, they moved to Aliquippa, Pennsylvania to serve in the Presbyterian Church.  From there they followed their calling and relocated to Birmingham, Alabama.  Their work in Alabama focused on bringing peace and unity in Jesus’s name during a time of heightened racial tension in the South. 

After faithful service in Birmingham, they again answered the call of God and moved their young family to Mexico.  This move was to allow the family to learn Spanish in preparation for a life of ministry in South America.

They served in Quito, Ecuador with Mission to the World planting and building churches from 1980 to 1989.  In addition to being an amazing wife and mother, Lois lived out her calling of loving, encouraging, and teaching people while ushering them into the presence of God through worship.   

In 1989, the family relocated to Santiago, Chile continuing their work with Mission to the World.  Initially, the work focused on the Chilean churches but soon expanded to include the needs of the international English speaking community in Chile. 
 
Sam and Lois “retired” in Santiago 4 years ago and have continued to remain very active in ministry and music. 

They were blessed with 4 beautiful children: Kathryn Mateer, Stephen Mateer (Lori), Yvonne “Vonnie” Campbell (Daniel) and Dawn Moreno (Cristian).   They also are the loving grandparents of 9 grandchildren:  Conner, Carter, Joshua, Victoria, Dante, Abigail, Jennavieve, Kailah and Daniel. 

A large group of family and friends gathered recently with Lois at her home to celebrate her 80th Birthday.  As we celebrated together, it was very evident the significant legacy of love that Lois left behind.  She was not only a true and loving mother to her biological children, but also her sons and daughter-in-law, and so many many others God placed in her path.  Anyone who encountered Lois, encountered the love of God.  The exuberant infectious love that characterized her life knew no limits or boundaries.  This love, which she gave so freely, changed lives and in turn was passed on exponentially touching the lives of countless others.  Lois Mateer indeed was the true expression of the hands, feet and, most importantly, heart of Jesus Christ on earth.  While we are deeply saddened and will miss her greatly on this earth, there is a sense of joy as in our mind’s eye we see her clasped in the God’s loving embrace and we hear Him whisper, “Well done, my good and faithful daughter.  Welcome home, I have a place prepared especially for you”……and somehow we know she is singing her heart out to her Savior who won her heart all those years ago.         

You are a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a sister and a friend.  You lived a life worthy of your calling.  We miss you more than words can say our beautiful Lois…. and we’ll see you again our precious one.
