Save a Leg

Give the gift of walking this holiday season by donating to save an adorable dog's leg! Lola is a golden retriever/labrador mix from Animal Care Services (ACS) in San Antonio, TX - one of the United States' ten highest intake shelters. With just hours to spare, she was saved from euthanasia and given a second chance at life through foster care.

Since ACS is a city-owned shelter, they have limited funds and resources, restricting their ability to treat every animal with proper medical care. Lola arrived at the shelter unable to put any weight on her left hind leg; no further tests were completed keeping the cause of the injury in question. The city vet at ACS said that she would heal quickly, but after two weeks in foster care, Lola continued to limp - her left leg was not functioning.

The city denied further care and she was taken to a private vet for treatment. Unfortunately, the x-rays confirmed that the top of her femur was shattered due to her hip getting dislocated. The exact cause is unknown, but the vet suspects she was hit by a car.

Although it looks rough, the vet is 100% confident they can save Lola's leg and get her back to full functionality by performing a Femoral Head Ostectomy (FHO); the surgery was estimated to cost anywhere between $2,200.00 - $3,600.00. The city vet reviewed the x-rays and could only offer the possibility of amputation, depending on availability.

Lola is only a year old and deserves to live the rest of her life on all four legs. She's extraordinarily well-behaved and loving - almost ready to find her forever home. This surgery would exponentially improve not only Lola's life but the lives of whoever adopts her (if interested in adoption, please email ACS and reference Animal ID #654796).

The goal is to raise enough to cover half of the surgery costs, which is tentatively scheduled for December 18th. Her only alternative is waiting for an amputation that might never happen. Please consider donating or sharing to help Lola get her life back.
