Long Covid Patient Peer Counseling Offers Hope

The Center for Long Covid Research, a registered New York State not-for-profit, is currently undertaking a fund-raising drive to support the creation of its Long Covid Peer Counseling Phone Line.

Long Covid, the condition where symptoms that surface after recovering from Covid-19 linger for weeks, months, or even years, is still a mystery to doctors and researchers, researchers at Yale University recently noted, and new symptoms of the condition are being discovered regularly.

Even the smallest donation will help Long Covid patients immensely.

My name is Jonathan Spira. I’m the director of research at the Center as well as a Long Covid patient with multiple neurological conditions as a result of having Long Covid. The list of symptoms I exhibit from Long Covid is extensive and includes acute renal failure, persistent chronic fatigue, and brain fog, among many others.

My symptoms are fairly typical of what a Long Covid patient experiences and one of the Center’s key goals is to connect Long Covid patients with each other for support.

You probably know someone – a friend or relative – who has Long Covid, and many of the debilitating symptoms that can last weeks, months, or years. More frightening is the fact that we don’t know what other symptoms may develop because the condition is so novel.

The Phone Line will connect patients with Long Covid, those who suspect they may have Long Covid, family members of patients, and health care practitioners with a trained peer-to-peer counselor who is also a Long Covid patient.

Your donation will go towards the cost of training volunteers who themselves are Long Covid patients to act as peer counselors. Donations will also be used towards the initial and monthly cost of infrastructure that will manage the system and all related processes. VirtualPBX, a telecommunications provider, has agreed to donate the VoIP solution that will provide the plumbing for the service.

The program has a goal of helping Long Covid patients understand they are not alone and helping them better cope with some of the limitations that the condition can place on a person.
