Syrian-Lebanese-Canadian documentary director Noura Kevorkian spent the last 12 years collecting stories and documenting the lives of Syrian refugees in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley. Noura was on the ground in 2011 when the Syrian revolution started before turning into full-fledged civil war and sparking the largest forced human migration in recent history with 13 million Syrians still displaced today.
Noura’s unparalleled documentary BATATA follows the life of a singularly determined Syrian refugee woman named Maria and her family for 10 long years. In May of 2022 BATATA premiered at Hot Docs, winning TOP 10 Audience Favourite Award along with a Directors Guild Jury Prize special mention. BATATA has gone on to play festivals around the world – from Europe to Oceania, Africa to South America. For her storytelling on the plight of Syrian migrant workers, this extraordinary long-process film was recognized with the Amnesty Human Rights Award.

A fundraising initiative has been established to help Noura continue to collect these stories of refugees with a focus on women and children. This project extends into the future, a multi-year social study into the lives of refugees living in precarious conditions.
Your support will help Noura cover the basic costs as Noura would need to travel regularly and indefinitely to Lebanon to document and capture these stories that nobody else is paying attention to and give voice to the forgotten millions.
