Lorax needs surgery

Donation protected
I don’t know quite how to do this, I’m not someone that has an easy time asking for help. Here goes nothing - I’m setting up a surgery fundraiser for my little rescue dog, and real life baby angel, Lorax. If you have some extra change you want to toss our way it would help us out tremendously.

Okay, let me give you the Reader’s Digest version (please see THE LONG VERSION below if you want way too much information). Many of you know that last July I adopted…probably a dog, maybe a goat, definitely a muppet named Lorax from the Human Society in Joplin Missouri. He’s two and a half years old and an all around sweetheart who snuggles on the couch, gets along with everybody, is the bestest boy and has to have one paw on me at all times.

A few weeks ago, after coming home from a moderate walk, Lorax could barely walk. After a day at the vet, blood work, sedation and full body x-rays we found out he’s got a severely deformed right hip that is basically crumbling apart and very painful. We had a surgery consult in Overland Park at the Orthopedic specialist and found out that he needs a pretty expensive surgery, a cardiac work up and physical therapy following surgery.

Oh and do you guys remember when I just took my first vacation in 3 years (after saving up for a year and a half)?! MAN IS THIS SOME CRAPPY TIMING. I am fully aware of how this looks and I promise I wouldn’t be asking for help if I didn’t need it pretty desperately. He’s just the best guy ever and he means the world to me. He totally deserves to live the rest of his life pain-free with the ability to run and play, this surgery will do that for him. Thank you in advance for your support, you have no idea how grateful we are.

xoxo Katie and Lorax

***THE LONG VERSION***

When I saw his picture on Petfinder and was encouraged* (read peer pressured) by my amazing coworkers and friends to go meet him. The man who introduced me to this crazy looking pup said “He’s a great dog! He knows lots of words like ‘sit.’ and ’stay.’ and ‘Wanna go for a ride?!’” At that Lorax jumped up, ran to the door and was READY TO GO FOR A RIDE. Well played, sir. Well played. I’m a huge sucker and adopted him on the spot. How do you say “wanna go for a ride?” to a shelter dog and not follow through? I had a two hour car ride home to regret my decision. What if he wants to kill the cats? What if Blanche hates him? What if they fight? What if he barks all the time, pees in the house, hates his kennel and bites kids? what if…

As it turned out, I won the shelter dog lottery. Not only did he become Blanche’s best friend, she’s not an easy girl to win over, he’s been a dream boat since day one. He’s so house trained it’s scary, he loves his kennel, rarely barks unless it’s to chat with the neighbor dogs, or to protect us from the obvious murderer/mailman. He avoids the cat that hates his guts and plays nicely with the one who want his attention and loves all kids. He turned Blanche from a potato into a dog in 3 days. He’s an all around sweetheart who snuggles on the couch and has to have one paw on me at all times.

Now that you know his story - Flash forward to a few  weeks ago - on the first nice spring Sunday, I took him for a moderately long walk - HE LOVES WALKS! But something was different this time. He started slowing down in the last 10 minutes and by the time we got home he couldn’t make it up the 2 porch steps. He was barely able to walk and was lame on what seemed like all of his legs. I took him in to see his vet (and possibly his favorite person besides me) first thing Monday morning. She had him stay for the day, did blood work, sedated him and took full body X-rays to figure out what was going on. Diagnosis? He has a really bad right hip. Like, really, really bad, bone on bone, extremely painful, deformed joint. His doctor said he did a really great job hiding it (good job buddy!) but that the damage was pretty severe and she wanted to get a consult with the specialty doctor in Kansas City.

We had our surgery consultation at Blue Pearl on 4/1/19 and found out that he needs to have an FHO surgery on that right hip. Essentially his surgeon needs to go in there and take out all the bad bone. They will also send out a bone biopsy and bone culture of what is taken out because we still don’t really know why this little guy has such severe joint damage at 3 years old. Possibilities are a cancer (they assure me it’s not likely but we need to rule it out), potentially a bone infection or an old traumatic injury that didn’t heal correctly. He will also require physical therapy after the surgery to ensure that he has the best surgical outcome possible especially since he’s so young and got so much life ahead of him. His surgeon also noticed he has a heart murmur during his consultation (can we catch a break?) and needs to do an echocardiogram with the cardiologist before he goes under the knife to make sure his heart is functioning properly before surgery.

So here’s where I’m asking for your help. Right now his surgery cost is looking like it will be around $3,300.00 and his cardiac work up will be approximately $700. Not to mention the aftercare physical therapy. I’m struggling financially from his earlier appointments, medications, X-rays and the unfortunate timing of my first vacation in three years. Any donation will be huge for us and I want to thank you in advance. We’re also accepting all the positive vibes, prayers and healing thoughts for our best buddy. Lorax is the honestly the best dog, BFF and all around deserving little creature. He should to be able to run and play, pain-free and live a very active and fulfilling life.
