We want to send a heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who donated to Dr. Loretta Jones' memorial service. We have surpassed our goal raising $22,820 in just one day! We are so grateful to have raised the funds needed to give Dr. Jones the homegoing she deserves. If you would still like to contribute you can donate to the "Protecting The Legacy" campaign. Funds raised here will help benefit Dr. Jones' agency Healthy African American Families, a 501c3 non-profit dedicated to social justice and community activation.

THANK YOU!

Loretta Jones, MA ThD passed away early in morning on Thanksgiving, November 22, 2018 at UCLA Santa Monica Hospital surrounded by friends and family members after a long battle with esophageal cancer.

Goal
We would like to raise $11,900 (previously $10,600) to to help the family with the costs of a Memorial Service in Dr. Jones' honor for approximately 500 people at a venue in South Los Angeles. The funds raised through this campaign will be used to rent a venue suitable for 500 individuals, to pay musicians and clergy, food and refreshments for guests, as well as floral arrangements for the service. This morning we learned we required an additional $1300 for hiring security services for the memorial. We have increased the limit to $20,000 to account for potentially unforeseen costs as we are trying to arrange for the memorial service with less than 24 hours notice.  We hope to have the Memorial Service location identified by the end of the day of Monday, November 26.

Brief Bio
Dr. Jones has long advocated for community partnered participatory research (CPPR) and planning approaches to address health disparities that underserved populations face. In 1992, through an agreement with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), CDU and UCLA, she founded Health African American Families (HAAF) to advance health education and facilitate collaboration among community organizations, academia and government agencies to improve the health of communities of color in Los Angeles. Since its inception nearly three decades ago, HAAF has demonstrated how CPPR can be an effective mechanism for directing power, collective action, system change and social justice in the process of addressing health disparities at the community level.

Her model for addressing social and health issues in vulnerable communities, published by the American Medical Association in 2007, has been adopted as a template by vulnerable communities locally and across the nation. Dr. Jones has been honored for her contributions by institutions such as the CDC, National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the United Nations and most recently received the UCLA Medal.
